Site Selection
Every later decision is downstream of where you settle. The ideal site solves water, defense, and food at once — and a perfect cabin on bad land will still fail. Walk a site across seasons if you can: a dry summer creek floods in spring, and a sheltered hollow becomes a frost pocket in winter.

From Nothing — safe water with no filter to buy
Clarifying water (making it clear) and purifying it (killing what makes you sick) are two different jobs. Cloudy water should always be settled and strained first, then disinfected. Below are the methods that need no manufactured filter — start with boiling, and improvise from there.
- Boil — the failsafe. A rolling boil for one minute (longer at altitude) kills every pathogen that makes you sick. It costs only fuel and a fireproof vessel and never wears out. When in doubt, boil. No metal pot? You can boil in a wooden, bark, or hide container, or even a sturdy plastic bottle, by dropping in fire-heated stones (see Cooking).
- Solar disinfection (SODIS). Fill a clear glass or plastic bottle with clarified water, lay it on its side in full sun for a full day (two if overcast). The sun's UV kills pathogens for free — no fuel, no filter. Laying the bottle on a dark surface or piece of metal speeds it up. The simplest purification method that exists.
- Solar still — water from foul, salty, or no obvious source. Dig a pit, set a clean container in the center, fill the pit around it with damp earth, green plants, or even questionable/salt water. Stretch clear plastic over the pit, weight the center with a pebble so it dips above the container, and seal the edges with soil. The sun evaporates moisture, which condenses on the underside of the plastic and drips — pure — into your container. Distillation powered entirely by sunlight.
- Improvised distillation. Any time you boil water and catch the steam on a cooler surface, you're distilling. Tilt a lid or a sheet of metal/plastic over a boiling pot so condensation runs into a clean catch container. This separates pure water even from salt, mud, or contamination — the only method that removes chemicals and salt, not just germs.
- Sun + mirror or lens to boil. A magnifying lens, a curved shaving mirror, a polished can bottom, or a parabolic dish lined with foil or polished metal can focus sunlight intensely enough to heat a dark vessel to boiling — fire-free purification on a clear day. The same focused-sun trick lights tinder (see Fire).
- Biosand / charcoal filter. Layers of clean gravel, then fine sand, then crushed charcoal in a barrel or pot clarify water and — once a living biological layer forms on the sand surface over a week or two — remove most pathogens too. Make the charcoal yourself in a sealed fire. This is your renewable everyday filter.
- Clarify before all of the above. Let muddy water stand so sediment settles, pour off the clear top, and strain through tightly woven cloth or a sand-packed cloth. Some plant materials (such as crushed seeds of certain trees) even help particles clump and sink. Clear water disinfects far more reliably than cloudy.
Remember the divide: filtering and settling make water clear; only boiling, sun (SODIS), or distillation make it safe. Do both, in that order.

More homesteads fail to contaminated water and infection than to any dramatic threat. Separate clean from dirty, always.

Human waste in the wrong place is how cholera, dysentery, and typhoid wipe out settlements. The fix needs no technology — only discipline and the right layout:
- Site it correctly. Latrine well downhill and far (at least 30 m / 100 ft) from any water source and the garden, and never uphill of where you draw drinking water. This single rule prevents most waterborne disease.
- Dig a pit latrine. A deep narrow hole with a cover; sprinkle ash, lime, or soil after each use to cut smell, flies, and pathogens. When it nears full, cover it over and dig the next.
- Or compost it. A managed humanure system (sawdust/cover material, long hot composting) safely turns waste into fertility — but it must compost fully for a year-plus before touching food crops, or it spreads disease.
- Separate everything dirty from everything clean. Dedicated tools and hands for the latrine; wash after, always. Keep flies off both food and waste — they carry disease between the two.
- Manage the rest. Greywater (wash water) soaks away from drinking water; food scraps compost; burn or bury refuse; stay ahead of rats and flies relentlessly.

Fire & Heat
Fire is the first technology and the one everything else rests on — purified water, cooked food, warmth, metalworking, pottery. Stockpile the easy firestarters, but learn the methods that work when the last match is long gone.
From Nothing — fire without matches
Every firestarter you can buy will eventually run out. Below them lie methods that need only wood, stone, and skill — and one habit that beats them all:
- Never let it go out. The oldest fire-keeping is simply not starting over. A banked fire — coals buried in ash — holds overnight; a slow-burning hardwood or punk-wood "fire log" carries embers for hours while travelling. Keeping a permanent hearth alive is far easier than relighting daily.
- Friction fire. The bow drill is the reliable primitive method: a spindle spun fast against a fireboard with a bow, throwing a tiny ember into a tinder bundle. Hand drill and fire-plough work too. It takes dry wood, correct technique, and practice — learn it now, not in the rain at dusk.
- Spark from stone and steel. Flint (or quartz, chert, jasper) struck against high-carbon steel throws sparks. Catch them in char cloth — scorched cotton you make yourself in a sealed tin — or true tinder fungus. A single piece of steel lasts a lifetime.
- Spark from the sun. A magnifying lens, the bottom of a polished can, a water-filled clear vessel, or even clear ice shaped into a lens will light tinder on a sunny day, forever, with no fuel.
Master a banked hearth plus one ignition method and you have fire for life. Keep tinder (fine bark, dry grass, fatwood shavings, char cloth) bone dry at all times.

Fuel & Lighting
Gasoline and propane are borrowed time — they degrade and can't be remade. The fuels that last forever come from wood, fat, and oil you produce yourself. Plan to transition off stored fuel onto renewable fuel before it's forced on you.
From Nothing — fuel and light you can always make
- Firewood — the foundation. Cut and season (dry 6–12 months) hardwood years ahead. Dry wood burns hot and clean; green wood wastes heat and chokes a chimney with creosote. This is the one fuel you can always renew.
- Charcoal for high heat. Burn wood slowly in a low-oxygen pit or sealed barrel and it becomes charcoal — lighter, and far hotter, essential for the forge and good for cooking. A renewable upgrade from raw wood.
- Fat & oil for light. Render animal fat into tallow, or press oil from seeds/nuts — both fuel simple lamps and make candles. A lamp is just oil and a fiber wick in any vessel; the "Betty lamp" and rushlight (a reed soaked in fat) are the oldest portable lights.
- Candles. Tallow or beeswax (see Beekeeping) plus a twisted plant-fiber or cotton wick, dipped or molded. Endlessly renewable light.
- Wood gas — running engines without gasoline. Burning wood in a low-oxygen gasifier produces flammable gas that can run a petrol engine or generator. Proven in past fuel shortages; complex but powerful (see The Jerry-Rig Bridge).
- Biogas. Rotting manure and waste in a sealed digester gives methane for cooking — turns a waste problem into fuel.

Food: Growing
A garden is the only food system that pays you back every year for free — if, and only if, your seed can reproduce itself. The trap is planting seed that grows once and then can't be saved.
From Nothing — seed that never runs out
- Only open-pollinated / heirloom seed. These breed true: save seed from this year's plants and next year's crop is the same. Hybrid (F1) seed does not — its offspring are unpredictable or sterile, so a hybrid packet feeds you once and then you're back to needing a store. Stockpile only heirloom varieties.
- Learn seed-saving per crop. Beans and grains are easy — let them dry on the plant. Tomatoes, squash, and others each have their own method, and some (biennials like carrots) only set seed in their second year. Know which is which before you depend on them.
- Forage wild seed and roots. Wild edible plants can be transplanted or sown into your plots; many crops descend from wild ancestors you can still gather.
- Trade seed. Seed is light, storable, and endlessly divisible — one of the best barter goods and the way communities keep variety and resilience.
Save more seed than you plant, store it cool, dry, and dark, and keep several years' back-stock against a failed harvest.

Livestock & Feed
The whole value of livestock is that they make more of themselves — but only if you start with breeding stock, not a freezer's worth of meat. One animal is a meal; a breeding pair is a herd. Securing that foundation stock is the hard part when there's nothing to buy.
From Nothing — where the first animals come from
You can't conjure a goat from the woods the way you can a swarm of bees. Foundation stock has to be acquired early or taken from what the land already holds:
- Acquire breeding stock now, while you can. The cheapest doomsday insurance is a few hens, a breeding pair of rabbits, or a doe and buck goat established before any crisis. Always animals that can reproduce — never a single animal or all one sex.
- Tame the wild where possible. Wild fowl eggs can be hatched under a broody hen or by a warm patient hand; young wild pigs, goats, or fowl raised from infancy will imprint and breed in captivity. This is slow and uncertain, but it's how every domestic animal began.
- Trade and travel for stock. In a scarcity economy, breeding animals are among the most valuable things to barter for. A community that pools animals keeps a wider, healthier gene pool than any lone household.
- Protect the breeders above all. Eat the surplus males and the old; never eat your last breeding female no matter how hungry. The breeding core is seed stock — consuming it ends the herd forever.
Start with the easiest, fastest breeders — rabbits and poultry multiply in months. Larger animals come later, once you can feed and shelter them through winter.
Stock, in order of ease

Hunting & Trapping
Hunting wins meat in bursts; trapping wins it steadily, day and night, while you do other work. A settlement leans on the trapline for reliable protein and saves active hunting and precious ammunition for larger game. Both are skills of patience and woodcraft far more than gear.
From Nothing — taking game with no gun or ammunition
Ammunition is finite and irreplaceable. The methods below need none, and most can be made from the land or salvage — they are how people fed themselves for all of history.
- Snares — the quiet workhorse. A loop of wire, cord, or sinew set on a game trail catches animals as they pass. Wire (salvaged from anywhere) is best; plant cordage works. Learn to read trails, set at the right height for the target animal, anchor firmly, and mask your scent. A line of many snares checked daily out-produces a hunter.
- Traps — deadfalls and pits. A weighted rock or log on a trigger (the figure-4 deadfall is the classic) kills small game with no materials but wood and stone. Larger pit traps and spring-pole snares take bigger animals. All are made entirely from the land.
- Bow and arrow. A wooden self-bow, string of sinew or plant fiber, and arrows tipped with knapped stone, bone, or salvaged metal — silent, and arrows are recoverable and remakeable. Takes real practice to hunt with, so build the skill early.
- Atlatl, sling, throwing stick, spear. Simpler than a bow and deadly with practice — a sling needs only cord and a pouch; a throwing stick (rabbit stick) takes small game and birds; a spear works at fish and large game alike.
- Bird & fish traps. Funnel traps, baited cage traps, and snares on roosts take birds; see Fishing for water traps. Passive, renewable, and they work while you sleep.
Salvaged wire and cordage are the keys to a trapline — stock wire deeply; it's light, lasts forever, and turns into endless snares.

Fishing
Where there's water with fish, this is often the easiest, most reliable protein you can get — and the passive methods catch fish around the clock with no effort once set. Hooks and line are tiny, light, and endlessly useful: stock them deeply, then learn to make and rig your own.
From Nothing — catching fish with no tackle
- Make hooks. Carve them from bone, wood thorns, or hardwood; bend them from salvaged wire, nails, or pins. The gorge — a small sharpened sliver of bone or wood tied at its middle, swallowed by the fish and turning sideways — is the oldest hook of all and needs no bending.
- Make line. Twist strong cordage from plant fiber, sinew, or inner bark (see Cordage). Fine, strong line is worth stocking, but you can make workable line from the land.
- Fish traps & weirs. The highest-yield passive method: a funnel trap (woven basket fish swim into but can't leave) or a stone/stake weir built across a stream that channels fish into a pen. Set it and harvest daily — it fishes while you sleep.
- Nets. Knotted from cordage with a netting needle (see Cordage) — gill nets, seines, and cast nets take many fish at once where legal and practical.
- Trotlines & set-lines. A long line with many baited hooks left out overnight; check and re-bait each morning. Passive, scalable, very productive.
- Spear, gig & hand-fishing. A sharpened multi-prong spear takes fish in clear shallows (aim low — water bends light); torchlight at night draws them in.
Funnel traps and weirs are the real workhorses — build them from sticks, stone, and cordage, and they feed a settlement with almost no daily labor.

Foraging
Wild food fills the gaps a garden can't and supplies medicine, fiber, and fuel besides — for free, renewing every season. But the entire discipline rests on one thing: certain identification. Foraging is not a skill you improvise hungry in the field; it's knowledge you build slowly and safely, long before you need it.
Identification — the rules that keep foraging from killing you
A single misidentified plant or mushroom can kill an adult. Many deadly species look almost identical to safe ones. These rules are absolute:
- Never eat anything you can't identify with 100% certainty. Not 95%. If there's any doubt, it is not food. When in doubt, go without.
- Learn the deadly look-alikes first, before the edibles. For every good wild food there is often a toxic twin — learn to tell them apart cold, by multiple features, not one.
- The "universal edibility test" is a myth — do not rely on it. The old survival-manual rub-and-taste test does NOT detect many lethal toxins (some of the deadliest mushrooms and plants pass it and kill you days later). It is dangerous folklore. Identification is the only real safety.
- Mushrooms demand expert-level certainty. The most poisonous (death cap and its relatives) look like edible species and cause fatal organ failure with no early warning. Learn fungi from an expert and a regional guide, never from a book alone, and treat every wild mushroom as guilty until proven safe.
- Beware where it grew. Even a known-safe plant can be poisonous if it grew in contaminated soil, polluted water, or roadside runoff.
- Introduce new foods one at a time, in small amounts. So that if something disagrees with you, you know what it was — and an allergic or mild reaction doesn't become a large dose.
What the land offers

Food Preservation
Abundance comes in seasons; hunger comes year-round. But preservation is the one homestead skill where a mistake doesn't just waste food — it can quietly kill the people who eat it. Learn the methods, and learn their dangers, with equal care.
Botulism — the invisible killer you must understand
This is the single most important safety warning in this entire manual. Botulism is a paralytic poisoning caused by Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium whose spores live in soil and dust everywhere. In the wrong conditions it produces one of the most lethal toxins known. A few key facts that have to live in your bones:
- You cannot see, smell, or taste it. Contaminated food often looks and tastes completely normal. There is no sensory warning — ever.
- It grows where there is no oxygen. Sealed jars, canned goods, sealed bags, oil infusions, and the deep inside of large cured meats are exactly its habitat — low-oxygen, low-acid, moist, room-temperature.
- It thrives in low-acid foods. Vegetables, meat, fish, beans, corn — these are the high-risk foods. High-acid foods (most fruit, properly fermented or pickled items) resist it.
- It is often fatal without hospital care. The antitoxin and the ventilator that treat it will not exist in your scenario. Prevention is the only defense you will have.
The rules that keep you alive:
- Never seal low-acid food without a pressure canner. Only a pressure canner reaches the temperature (above boiling) that destroys the spores. A boiling-water bath is not hot enough for vegetables, meat, or fish. If you have no pressure canner, do not can these foods — preserve them another way (below).
- When in doubt, boil before eating. The toxin itself (not the spores) is destroyed by a hard boil — boiling home-canned low-acid food for 10+ minutes before eating is a life-saving last safeguard.
- Discard any bulging, leaking, foaming, or off jar — without tasting. Do not feed questionable preserved food to animals or people. Bury or burn it.
- Never store garlic, herbs, or vegetables in oil at room temperature. This is a classic botulism trap. Keep such infusions cold and use them within days, or dry the ingredients instead.
- Be cautious with cured meats and sealed ferments. Proper salt levels, acidity, and curing salts (where available) are what hold botulism back — follow tested methods exactly, never by guess.
Treat every word above as non-negotiable. More careful homesteaders have been killed by a beautiful-looking jar of green beans than by almost any wilderness hazard.
Methods, ranked by safety without modern gear
In a no-resupply scenario the safest methods are the ones that don't depend on a perfect airtight seal. Lean on these first:
- Drying / dehydrating Renewable — safest of all; no water means almost nothing grows, including botulism. Sun, air, or smoke-dry meat, fish, fruit, vegetables
- Smoking Renewable — dries and adds preservative compounds; pair with salt for meat & fish
- Salting & curing Critical — heavy salt pulls water out and blocks bacteria; follow tested salt ratios exactly
- Fermenting Renewable — the acid produced (as in sauerkraut, kimchi) protects against botulism; keep food submerged under brine, use enough salt
- Root-cellaring / cold storage Renewable — cool, ventilated storage of whole roots, apples, squash; no sealing, low risk
- Sugar / honey preserves — high sugar binds water; honey is naturally preservative
- Freezing — free in cold-climate winter; stops all spoilage while frozen
- Pressure canning Critical — the ONLY safe way to seal low-acid food; requires a working canner and the knowledge to use it. Water-bath canning is safe ONLY for high-acid foods (most fruit, pickles, jams)
Salt is the keystone of curing and one input most settlements can't make easily — so understand where it comes from when the bags run out.
From Nothing — making salt and preserving without it
Salt cures meat, makes cheese, protects ferments, and keeps livestock healthy. Stockpile it deeply — but know how to produce and stretch it:
- From the sea or salt springs. Boil or sun-evaporate seawater or brine-spring water down to crystals. Fuel- and labor-intensive but endlessly renewable wherever salt water exists.
- From rock & earth. Inland, salt may come from natural deposits, salt licks animals reveal, or salty soils leached with water and re-evaporated.
- Lean on the safe low-tech methods. Drying, smoking, fermenting, and root-cellaring preserve food with little or no sealing — and sidestep the botulism risk of improper canning entirely. These are your backbone when jars and pressure canners are gone.
- Reuse and render. Salt from brines can often be recovered. Waste nothing.
If you're near a coast or salt source, salt-making is a renewable trade good worth its weight — others will need it as badly as you do.

Cooking meat safely — when there's no thermometer
Undercooked meat carries parasites and bacteria that cause severe, sometimes fatal illness — and with no doctor, prevention is everything. A meat thermometer is ideal (the only certain test), so stock several; but you must also be able to judge doneness by eye and touch, the way every cook did before thermometers existed.
Tests that work without a thermometer: cut into the thickest part and the center — look for clear (not pink/red) juices and opaque, firm flesh all the way through; the touch test — raw meat is squishy, well-done meat is firm and springs back; and time plus a steady fire — thicker cuts need longer, so cook smaller pieces when in doubt. The safe rule when uncertain: cook it longer.
Food-handling — the illness you can prevent
Foodborne illness causes vomiting and diarrhea, and in a world with no IV fluids, dehydration from a gut illness can kill — especially the young, old, and sick. These habits matter as much as the cooking itself:
- Keep raw and cooked apart. Never put cooked food back on the board, plate, or hands that touched it raw. Cross-contamination from raw poultry and pork is a leading cause of sickness.
- Wash hands, tools, and surfaces after handling raw meat — with soap you make yourself if need be.
- Cook freshly killed game soon, or preserve it fast. Meat spoils quickly in warmth; gut and cool a carcass promptly (see Hunting).
- Reheat thoroughly and don't re-save repeatedly. Bring leftovers to a full steaming heat; when in doubt, boil. Cooked food left warm for hours grows bacteria — eat it, preserve it, or discard it.
- Treat any wild or scavenged-source food with extra caution. If meat smells off, is slimy, or you're unsure how long it sat — don't risk a person on it.
Nutrition & Staples
A diet that's all lean meat or all one crop causes deficiency disease. Scurvy and pellagra killed more settlers, sailors, and pioneers than predators or weather ever did — slow, invisible killers that a little knowledge prevents entirely.
From Nothing — preventing the deficiency diseases
These illnesses come from missing nutrients, not missing calories — you can starve of them with a full belly. Each has a simple, foragable prevention:
- Scurvy (no vitamin C). Bleeding gums, wounds that won't heal, exhaustion. Prevent with almost any fresh plant matter: rosehips, pine-needle tea, fresh greens, sprouted seeds, fermented vegetables (sauerkraut kept sailors alive), berries, organ meats. Even in deep winter, sprouts and pine tea cover it.
- "Rabbit starvation" (no fat). A diet of only lean meat (wild rabbit, lean game) literally cannot sustain you — you waste away on it. Always pair lean protein with fat: animal fat, organ meat, marrow, nuts, oilseeds, dairy. Fat is a survival priority, not an indulgence.
- Pellagra (no niacin). Struck people living on untreated corn. The fix is old and elegant: nixtamalize corn — soak/cook it in wood-ash lye or lime water — which unlocks the niacin. Or simply eat a varied diet with meat, eggs, and legumes.
- Goiter (no iodine). Inland diets can lack iodine. Cover it with stored iodized salt, seaweed/kelp, or seafood.
- General rule — eat the whole animal and a rainbow of plants. Organs, fat, and marrow carry the vitamins muscle meat lacks; variety across many plants and animals prevents nearly every deficiency. Monotony is the danger.

Metalworking is the keystone: the smith makes the axe that fells the tree, the plough that breaks the ground, the knife, the nail, the hinge, the cooking pot. A settlement with a working forge can repair and replace almost anything. Without one, every metal tool you own is slowly dying.
From Nothing — a forge from scratch
You do not need a foundry. For generations after any collapse, the world is littered with finished steel — and a basic forge can be built from earth and salvage:
- Work salvage before ore. Smelting iron from raw ore is the deepest, hardest skill of all. Skip it as long as you can: the built world has left you leaf springs, rebar, railroad steel, vehicle parts, files, and tool steel — already refined, just needing reshaping. This is your metal supply for a lifetime.
- Build a simple forge. A hole in the ground or a clay/brick box, charcoal for fuel (you can make charcoal yourself — see Fuel), and air forced in from below. The air is everything: hotter air, hotter fire.
- Make the bellows. Forced air is what raises charcoal to forging heat. A bellows from leather and wood, or a salvaged hand-crank blower, or even a tube you blow down — moving air through the coals is the whole secret.
- Anvil and tools from salvage. Any heavy block of hard steel — a railroad rail, a sledgehammer head, a thick plate — is an anvil. Tongs can be forged from rebar; the first hammer can be salvaged. Once you can forge, you forge the rest of your own tools.
- Learn heat-treating. Heating steel and quenching, then tempering, is what makes an edge hard enough to hold and tough enough not to shatter. This knowledge turns scrap into blades.
Only when salvage finally runs out — generations on — does ore smelting (bloomery furnace, charcoal, iron ore or even bog iron) become worth the enormous effort. Keep the knowledge; you likely won't need it in your lifetime.

Home Chemistry
A handful of simple chemistries replace whole shelves of store-bought goods — soap, lye, vinegar, charcoal — all made from ash, fat, and salt. These are the quiet backbone of a clean, healthy settlement.
From Nothing — soap from ash and fat
Soap is two ingredients, both of which you produce on the homestead, and it's one of the most important things you can make — clean hands and clean wounds prevent the infections that kill.
- Make lye from wood ash. Pour water slowly through a barrel of hardwood ashes; the brown liquid that drips out is lye (potassium hydroxide). Strength test: it's right when it floats an egg or a potato with a coin-sized patch showing.
- Render fat. Melt animal fat (tallow or lard) and strain it clean — a by-product of every animal you butcher.
- Cook them together. Boil lye and fat until they saponify into soap. Ash-lye makes soft soap; add salt to harden it into bars. Exact ratios matter — learn from a guide before relying on it.
The same wood-ash lye also assists tanning and some food prep (nixtamalizing corn, which prevents pellagra). Ash, fat, and salt: three things you always have.

Milling & Grain Processing
A field of wheat is worthless without the means to thresh, winnow, grind, and store it. This chain is what turns calories in the field into bread on the table — and powered milling frees enormous labor.
From Nothing — grain into flour by hand
- Thresh. Knock the grain loose from the stalk — beat bundles with a flail or stick over a tarp, or tread it underfoot. Separates seed from straw.
- Winnow. Toss the threshed grain in a shallow basket on a breezy day; the light chaff blows away and the heavy grain falls back. Wind does the sorting for free.
- Grind. The oldest mill is two stones — a flat metate and a hand stone (mano) — or a rotary quern (one stone turned on another). Hard, slow work, but it needs nothing but stone. A hand mill is far easier; a water- or wind-powered mill (see Water & Mechanical Power) frees a person from the daily grind entirely.
- Store it whole. Grain keeps for years whole and dry but spoils fast once ground — so grind only what you'll soon use, and guard stored grain fiercely against damp and rodents.

Every cheese needs two things you can't simply buy in a collapse — a culture to sour the milk and rennet to set it. Both come from the land:
- Culture comes free. Milk left warm sours on its own from wild bacteria. Once you have one good batch of yogurt, soured milk, or kefir, you keep it alive forever by stirring a spoonful into the next batch — a living culture passed on indefinitely.
- Rennet from the animal. The traditional source is the dried stomach lining of a young milk-fed animal (calf, kid, lamb) — a piece soaked in water yields the enzyme that curdles milk. Every animal you slaughter can supply it.
- Rennet from plants. Where you'd rather not use stomach, several plants curdle milk — fig sap, nettle, thistle and cardoon flowers, and others. Knowing your local plant rennet means cheese with no animal source at all.
- Simplest of all — acid set. No rennet needed for fresh cheeses: a splash of vinegar or lemon (or any soured whey) into hot milk curdles it instantly into soft cheese. Start here.
Make your own butter by churning cream in any sealed vessel; age hard cheese in a cool cellar or cave. Salt (Sec. on Preservation) is the one input you must secure — it's essential to most cheese.

And unlike every other animal, you don't need to acquire bees from anyone — the wild is full of them, free for the taking.
From Nothing — catching your first colony
You never have to buy bees. A wild colony swarms each spring, sending out a cloud of bees with a queen looking for a new home. That swarm is how you start.
- Build a hollow home. A hollowed log ("gum"), a woven straw skep, or a simple wooden box with bars across the top for comb. No foundation or frames needed — bees build their own comb.
- Bait it. Rub the inside with beeswax, propolis, or aromatic herbs (lemongrass-like plants work). Set it shaded, a few feet up, facing the morning sun, in late spring when swarms fly.
- Or capture a swarm directly. A resting swarm hangs in a calm clump on a branch. At dusk, when most bees have landed, sharply shake or brush the cluster into a box or basket. Get the queen and the rest follow her. Carry it to your hive at night.
- Hive them. Tip the swarm into your prepared home, give them comb space, and leave them undisturbed for days. If the queen stays, they stay.
Once established, the colony makes more colonies. Each spring it swarms; you catch your own swarms and grow your apiary indefinitely — never buying a single bee.

Tanning & Leather Production
Leather is one of the most useful materials a settlement can make — boots, harness, belts, bags, straps, hinges, bellows, scabbards. Wasting hides wastes half the animal. Tanning turns a by-product into a renewable material industry.
From Nothing — hide into leather
- Flesh & dehair. Scrape fat and flesh off the raw hide over a beam; soak in a wood-ash lye or lime bath to loosen the hair, then scrape it away.
- Tan. Two renewable routes: bark tanning soaks the hide in a solution of tannin-rich bark (oak, hemlock, chestnut) over weeks; brain tanning works the emulsified brain of the animal into the hide — famously, each animal has just enough brain to tan its own skin.
- Soften & smoke. Work the hide constantly as it dries to keep it supple, then smoke it — smoke waterproofs the leather and keeps it soft after wetting.
- Rawhide shortcut. Skip tanning entirely: a cleaned, dried, untanned hide becomes rawhide — rock-hard and perfect for lashing, bindings, and durable straps.

Rope, Cordage & Nets
Rope is so fundamental it's invisible — until you have none. Lashings, harness, snares, nets, slings, bowstrings, and rigging all depend on it. The ability to make strong cordage from plants and fiber is a quiet keystone skill.

- Gather fiber. Inner bark (basswood, cedar, willow), nettle and dogbane stalks, yucca and agave leaves, or animal sinew all give strong fiber. Dry, then crush and separate the long fibers.
- Reverse-wrap. The universal technique: take a bundle of fiber, twist one half away from you, fold it over the other, and let it twist back on itself. Splice in new fiber as you go and the cord can be any length.
- Scale up. A simple rope-walk or hand-cranked rope machine twists several strands into thick, consistent rope fast — a huge step up from hand-twisting.
- Net & lash. With a netting needle and gauge, cord becomes fishing nets, carry-nets, and fencing; knots and splices do the rest.

- Find & clean clay. Riverbanks, subsoil, and eroded cuts hold clay. Test it: a pinch should hold a shape without crumbling. Pick out grit and roots, and mix in a little sand or grog (crushed fired pottery) so it won't crack.
- Shape. Pinch pots, coil-building (ropes of clay stacked and smoothed), or a wheel if you can build one. Dry slowly in shade — fast drying cracks the pot.
- Fire. A pit fire (pots buried in a wood fire) hardens clay into permanent ceramic. A built kiln reaches higher temperatures for stronger, less porous ware.
- Seal it. Burnishing, or a wood-ash or salt glaze in a hot kiln, makes vessels watertight and food-safe.
Glass is the advanced cousin — sand, soda (from ash), and lime melted at high heat — worth pursuing later for jars, windows, and lenses. Pottery comes first and covers most needs.

- Reusable surfaces first. Before making paper, conserve it: a slate and chalk, or a wax tablet (smoothed beeswax in a frame, written with a stylus and wiped clean), give endless everyday writing for notes and teaching.
- Make paper. Pulp soaked rag or plant fiber, spread the slurry thin on a fine screen (a "mould and deckle"), press out the water, and dry. Rough but writable. Animal hides scraped thin make parchment for documents meant to last.
- Make ink. Soot or fine charcoal mixed with water and a little gum or hide glue makes black ink. Iron gall ink — crushed oak galls steeped with an iron source (rusty nails) — is the durable ink that wrote much of history. Berries and plant dyes give color.
- Make pens. A cut and shaped feather quill, or a reed pen, draws ink finely; both are quick to make and replace.
Pencils outlast pens and need no ink — stock them deeply. The goal is to never lose the ability to record, because written knowledge is the one inheritance that compounds.

From Nothing — medicine when the kit is empty
This is the one domain where "make it yourself" has hard limits, and being honest about them is what keeps you safe. Here's the real picture:
- What you genuinely can do. Renewable wound care is the highest-value skill: clean water, soap, honey (a proven antiseptic dressing), salt-water cleaning, pine pitch and certain barks, and well-known medicinal plants — willow bark (the origin of aspirin) for pain and fever, yarrow to slow bleeding, garlic and others as mild antimicrobials. Master sanitation, wound cleaning, splinting, fluids, and rest — these save far more lives than any drug.
- Stockpile the real thing. Deep-stock manufactured antibiotics, painkillers, and your group's prescriptions now, through legitimate channels — they keep for years cool and dark and are irreplaceable. This is your true antibiotic supply.
- On home-grown penicillin — the honest truth. Yes, penicillin was first grown from Penicillium mold, and the story tempts every prepper. But what you can grow in a jar cannot be purified, measured, or dosed. You cannot know its strength, whether the same mold also produced toxins, or whether you're giving a curing dose or merely a sub-dose that breeds resistant bacteria. Crude mold preparations are as likely to poison or sensitize as to cure. It is not a reliable home remedy — treat the idea as a last-ditch historical curiosity, not a plan. The safe version of "antibiotics from nothing" is prevention (sanitation, clean wounds) plus a deep pre-stocked supply, not a mold jar.
- Build human knowledge. The most renewable medicine is a trained healer. Learn real first aid and wilderness medicine now; keep good references; if you can, recruit or train someone with genuine medical skill into the group.

Dental & Vision
An abscessed tooth is agony, and the infection can spread to the jaw, bloodstream, and brain — historically a real cause of death. Failing eyesight quietly turns a capable worker into a dependent. Both are routinely ignored in survival planning until they cripple someone, so plan for them deliberately.
From Nothing — teeth and eyes when there's no dentist
- Prevention is almost everything. Most dental disaster comes from decay and gum disease, both largely preventable: clean teeth daily (a frayed twig "chew stick", a cloth, salt, baking soda, or charcoal all work), rinse with salt water, and go very easy on sugar. A clean mouth rarely becomes an emergency.
- Pain relief. Clove oil (or chewed cloves) numbs tooth pain — one of the most reliable natural remedies there is. Salt-water rinses ease inflammation. Willow bark eases pain generally (see Medical).
- Fillings, temporarily. Stock dental cement / temporary filling material — it seals a broken or lost-filling tooth and can hold for a long time, buying years out of a small kit.
- Abscess — the dangerous one. A swelling at the gum, throbbing pain, fever. Warm salt-water rinses may help it drain; this is exactly the case to spend your stockpiled antibiotics on. An untreated spreading dental infection can be fatal — take it seriously.
- Extraction — the last resort. When a tooth is beyond saving and causing spreading infection, removing it may be the only option. It is brutal, risky (bleeding, breaking the tooth, infection), and a true emergency-only measure — learn the technique from proper references and a professional beforehand, never improvise it cold. Far better to prevent the situation entirely.
On vision: lenses can't be made from nothing, so stock multiple pairs of glasses and know everyone's prescription. A magnifying lens doubles as reading aid, fire-starter, and fine-work tool.

- Soap from ash and fat. The keystone — make it yourself from wood-ash lye and rendered fat (see Home Chemistry). Even plain ash, sand, or certain "soapwort"-type plants scrub and clean when soap is short.
