This is what Trent is building.
A Wood of One’s Own isn’t a wish-list — it’s the real, in-progress restoration of my own west-facing slope above the Milwaukee River in Grafton. Every plant in the census is already in the ground or on the propagation bench, counted and confirmed by hand, and it grows a little wilder every season.

Why the soil matters most. “Manawa silt loam” is not jargon to skip — it is the answer to almost every “will this grow?” question you will ever ask here. Your ground is silty (fine particles that hold water and nutrients well), it drains slowly (so it stays damp, and gets genuinely wet down in the crease), and it is faintly alkaline (limy), which a few acid-loving plants dislike. That is why this guide keeps steering you toward trees like swamp white oak, river birch, and tamarack that love wet feet, and away from things that need sharp drainage or sour soil. Match the plant to this soil and it will all but grow itself. Fight the soil, and you will lose. Everything that follows is built on these five facts.

Your first year, in one box
Twelve months, six moves
- This fall: plant two swamp white oaks and a bur oak, bare-root, caged the same day (ch. 4 & 14). Dormant-seed one sunny patch of meadow, however small (ch. 6). Rake the lawn’s leaves into the wood, not the curb (ch. 11).
- This winter: learn buckthorn bark, then cut and bag-or-girdle every one you find (ch. 12). Prune nothing oak-shaped after March (ch. 14).
- First spring: the garlic-mustard walk — pull every white-flowered stalk before it pods, gloves on, bag sealed (ch. 12). Plant the crease: dogwood, buttonbush, sedges (ch. 7).

The Ground
What this land is, who kept it before you, and the two small worlds it holds.
The lawn was never the point. The forest is.

Every yard in Wisconsin is a forest being held underwater. Stop mowing any patch of this state for fifty years and oaks will find it; stop for two hundred and you will have a wood so old its floor glows with fungus in October. The land where your trees came down is not damaged — it is briefly unoccupied, and it remembers exactly what it was. This book is a set of instructions for letting it remember faster, written for someone who has just traded two of the world’s great cities for a quiet slope above a Wisconsin river, and who may be wondering what, exactly, they are supposed to love about it.
Here is the honest answer: not order. Cairo stands in the oldest garden tradition on earth — the walled green refuge set against the desert, water made visible as wealth.1 London perfected the opposite art, the landscape composed like a painting and walked through like one. A northern wood offers neither the refuge nor the painting. It is looser, wilder, and four times a year it tears up its own design and starts over. What it offers instead is company — more living things per acre, awake and audible, than any city street you have ever walked. The work of this book is to fill your acre with that company, and then teach you to do the rarest thing a landowner can do: almost nothing.
Thoreau, the patron saint of this project, moved to a pond outside his town in 1845 to see what a small piece of ground could teach a person paying full attention.2 His conclusion, compressed: the ground does all the work, and attention is the rent. "I have a great deal of company in my house; especially in the morning, when nobody calls." You are about to inherit the same kind of company. The chapters that follow are arranged the way the work is: first understand the land, then plant it, then defend it, then — for the rest of your life — watch it.

And what the land gives back to you
One honest word about the gardener, not the garden. It is tempting to believe a yard full of plants is scrubbing your air clean — but the famous “houseplant” effect is real only in a sealed room, and outdoors, at any honest density, your trees are not measurably changing the oxygen you breathe. The real gifts are quieter and better documented: time in green space lowers stress hormones and blood pressure; daylight and movement outdoors lift mood and deepen that night’s sleep; aromatic plants — lavender most of all — and the shade and hush of leaves do real work on the nervous system. And there is the thing no instrument measures: the absorbed, self-forgetting state of hands in the soil on a long afternoon, the flow that arrives when the fretting part of the mind goes quiet and the work simply carries you. The biodiversity is the point of the wood. This is the point of tending it.

Before Grafton was a village — before the lime kilns, before the dam, before a single survey stake — the riverbank below your slope was a settled, worked, and loved landscape. People have lived along the Milwaukee River for thousands of years, and the place you are about to replant fed them the whole time: fish from the river, nuts and game from the hardwoods, wild rice from the still water.3
The nations of this place were many and mobile — the Menominee, whose homeland this was; the Potawatomi, keepers of the fire of the Three Fires Confederacy and the principal residents of the Milwaukee country by the 1700s; the Ojibwe, Ho-Chunk, Sauk, Meskwaki, and Odawa, who traded and held council across it.3 The river’s own name carries their description of it: Milwaukee descends from an Algonquian word — rendered minowakiing in Anishinaabemowin — usually translated as "the good land" or "the gathering place by the water."4 The city took its name from the land, not the other way around. When you stand on your rise and look west toward the water, you are looking at the thing itself.
And here is the fact that should change how you hold your shovel: the most beautiful landscape this region ever produced was made on purpose. The open, park-like oak savannas that the first surveyors mistook for Eden — great oaks standing apart on sunlit grass — were built and maintained by deliberate, skillful burning over countless generations.5 Oak savanna is now among the rarest plant communities on the continent; less than one percent of the original Midwest savanna survives.5 The plan in this book — a few great oaks, light reaching the ground between them, prairie flowers below — is not a novelty. It is a restoration of the oldest design this ground has ever worn, and you are picking up tools that were set down barely six generations ago.
The stone that remembers

A short walk downriver, in Lime Kiln Park, rests a glacial boulder of seven to nine tons that the Native peoples of this area held sacred — a spirit rock, a place where tobacco and food were left and burned in honor of ancestors. For generations it sat on the old Ahlers farmstead off Wisconsin Avenue; in late 2025 it was moved, with ceremony, to a permanent home in the park beside the river.6
The Menominee tell how spirit rocks came to be: a warrior, granted one wish by Manabush, asked foolishly for eternal life — and was pressed into the earth with the words, you shall be a stone; thus you will be everlasting. Go and see it. Go quietly. Some who keep the old ways still leave a pinch of tobacco, and the courtesy you owe a neighbor’s altar applies in full.
None of this history is a weight you must carry; it is ballast. The work in the chapters ahead — planting oaks, burning back invaders, letting the ground feed everything that lands on it — is the same work this river has always rewarded.

What the land fed them
The people who kept this ground did not farm it the way a single field is farmed; they read the whole landscape and took what each season offered. Where they planted, they planted the Three Sisters — corn, beans, and squash together, a near-complete diet in one mound. But the daily staple of the Great Lakes was wild rice, manoomin, gathered from the still water in late summer: calorie-dense, storable, and central enough that nations organized their year around the harvest. Around it turned everything else — fish and hunted deer, foraged berries and nuts, wild onion and Jerusalem artichoke lifted from the ground. The year had a rhythm: winter leaned on stored corn and dried meat and rendered fat; spring brought ramps, the first green shoots, and the maple-sugar run; summer meant fresh fish, berries, and the garden. The principle was not one food every day but the whole table across the year — abundance and scarcity taking turns, and a people who knew exactly what to reach for and when. The wood you are building is a smaller version of that same table.

Stand in the middle of your lot and you can see the whole estate in one slow turn: a gentle rise leaning west toward the Milwaukee River, and a single shallow crease threading down through it — a drainage no wider than a stride, knee-to-waist deep, with a soft little basin partway along. Most of the year the crease carries a trickle a few inches wide. In April it wakes and gushes. That is the entire inventory, and it is enough, because those are not one habitat but two, and nearly every decision in this book reduces to a single question: rise, or crease?
The fact that decides everything: your soil
The soil under your feet is mapped by the USDA as Manawa silt loam (MaA) — deep, fine-textured, somewhat poorly drained, and faintly alkaline.7 Translated from soil-science: it holds water like a sponge, it stays damp long after rain, the crease stays genuinely wet, and the chemistry runs limy rather than sour. Every plant recommended in this book was chosen against that one line of data. It is why the tree list leans on swamp white oak, river birch, and tamarack — species that drink standing water and shrug at lime — and why you will find no blueberries, no rhododendrons, and no plants that demand sharp drainage anywhere in these pages. Match the plant to this soil and rain does your watering forever. Fight it and you will lose slowly, expensively, and every single time.
Three soils, stacked down the slope
Your ground is the middle band of a sequence soil scientists call the Kewaunee–Manawa–Poygan catena — three related soils the same glacier laid down in a row, sorted by how wet they sit. The old county survey even put numbers on it: across this association the dry upland Kewaunee runs about seventy percent, your Manawa about fifteen, and the wet-bottom Poygan about five.7 It is the same story as your rise, your crease, and your river — only told in soil. Learn the three bands and you already know where every plant in this book wants to stand.
Kewaunee uplands — dry feet
Well-drained till on the high ground; the sunny crest.
- Oak, hickory, hazelnut, serviceberry, wild plum — and the whole prairie meadow.
- Anything that wants sun and sharp drainage belongs here, never down on the shaded slope.
Manawa footslope — where you are
Water perches one to three feet down in spring, then dries by midsummer.

The practical read: heavy clay that waterlogs in spring, then bakes alkaline in summer. That one sentence explains every choice in this book — why the acid-lovers (blueberry, jack-in-the-pulpit) live in pots with their own soil, why the prairie wants the dry crest and never the shaded slope, and why the wet foot of your land is an asset the moment you plant it with things that drink. One caution before any digging in the low spots: about a tenth of this map unit can register as wetland, so check the WDNR Surface Water Data Viewer’s wetland layer before you move earth, and probe for century-old farm drain-tile that may still run through the clay.22
Twenty-five thousand years in the making
Your soil has a story, and it is worth knowing, because it explains every stubborn fact about this ground. Twenty-five thousand years ago this slope lay under the Laurentide ice sheet — ice a mile thick, grinding south out of Canada and dragging with it the pulverized rock of the Canadian Shield. When the ice began to pull back about sixteen thousand years ago, the local arm of it — the Lake Michigan Lobe, advancing from the northeast — left behind a chaotic, unsorted dump of clay, sand, and silt called till. Crucially, it had scraped that till off a bed of limestone and dolomite, so it came loaded with calcium and magnesium carbonate. That is the whole reason your soil runs limy: it is ground-up ancient seafloor, and the lime never washed out.
By twelve thousand years ago the ice was gone — bare till, then tundra, then warming. Pioneer plants moved in, died, and rotted; for eight thousand years a forest fed the ground its own fallen leaves until it built the dark, crumbling, humus-rich topsoil you stand on. This is why the planting lists read the way they do. Blueberries fail here not because you did anything wrong but because they evolved on sour ground and are asking your soil for a different story. Apples, pears, and plums thrive because they came up in exactly this kind of glaciated, lime-rich, forest-built earth — they are reading the same book your soil is written in. And when you find enchanter’s nightshade (Circaea canadensis) volunteering in the shade, take it as a compliment to the ground: it grows only where the soil is genuinely rich. This earth remembers what it was.
The open rise
A west-facing slope above a river is a small climatic gift. It drains better than flat ground, catches the long warm light of the afternoon, and sits in the sheltered air of the valley — which is why fruit that sulks elsewhere in Ozaukee County (pawpaw, even a coddled fig) has a real chance here. The rise is your savanna: oaks and hickory spaced for sun, prairie flowers between them, the food and medicine gardens at the edges. USDA zone 5b — winter lows of −10 to −15 °F — is the test every plant here has already passed.8
The damp crease
It would be easy to dismiss a five-foot dip with a trickle in it. Do not. The crease is cooler, wetter, and shadier than everything around it, which makes it a different country: the country of dogwood and sedge, cardinal flower and frog song. Thoreau spent whole chapters on one pond and the ants under one log, and he was right to. Your crease is where the frogs will breed, where the fireflies will rise at dusk, and where the rain that falls on the whole neighborhood gets one last filtering before it reaches the river. Chapter 7 plants it; chapter 15 turns it into an amphibian district.
The river underneath it all
The Milwaukee River below you is a wildlife highway with two green banks for shoulders. Birds, seeds, frogs, foxes, and mink all travel it, on both sides, all year. A welcoming yard anywhere along a river corridor fills with life several seasons faster than the same yard in open country — the travelers are already passing; you only have to give them a reason to stop.9
Here is something worth knowing before you plant, prune, or fight a single tree. A tree trunk looks solid and alive all the way through, but it isn't. Almost all of that wood is dead — old, hardened plumbing. The only truly living part of the trunk is a film barely thicker than a sheet of paper, hidden just beneath the bark, called the cambium. Each year it lays down two new layers: on its inside, the xylem (the wood), a vast bundle of microscopic straws that carries water up from the roots to the leaves; on its outside, the phloem, which carries the sugar the leaves make back down to feed the roots. The rings you count in a cut stump are simply old years of xylem, retired from service. So a tree grows the way a candle thickens — from a living skin just under the surface, wrapping fresh life around a dead core. This one fact explains a great deal of what follows: why a careless string-trimmer nick around the base can kill a young tree (it severs the living ring), why you prune cleanly and let the bark heal over the wound, and — further on — why girdling a buckthorn by cutting that thin ring all the way around will kill even a huge one without a drop of poison. Respect the inch beneath the bark, and you understand the tree.

You are not starting from nothing
Before you plant a single tree, walk the land and meet what is already standing. A mature black cherry — perhaps thirty years old and twenty inches through — anchors the back mound; by its size, its canopy, and the seedlings scattered beneath it, this is the mother tree, the hub the young wood will organize itself around. Near it stands an older silver maple, whose greedy roots and thirsty shade make one side of the mound drier and more competitive — plant that side accordingly. Volunteer swamp white oaks, American plums, chokecherries, and boxelders have already seeded themselves in; the plums on the mound were sown by birds, not by you. Along the back edge runs a drainage ditch that carries water from several nearby houses, keeping that seam reliably moist. And leave the standing dead wood wherever it is safe to: a snag is an apartment block for woodpeckers, owls, and native bees, and the boxelder bugs are already, quietly, thinning the boxelders for you.

Nine trees, chosen to outlive you.

A wood is decided in one afternoon — the afternoon you choose the trees. Everything else can be revised; the canopy cannot, not on any timescale a person lives on. So this chapter is deliberately short on options and long on conviction: nine species, every one native to southeastern Wisconsin, every one proven on wet, limy Manawa ground, and every one carrying its expected lifespan on its card — because the difference between a 70-year tree and a 400-year tree is the difference between decorating a yard and founding a forest.
Plant the oaks first and plant them in twos and threes. Oaks are the keystone of the eastern forest — they host more caterpillar species (over five hundred) than any other tree genus on the continent, and caterpillars are the currency every nesting songbird is paid in.10 They are also mostly self-incompatible: a lone oak sets a poor crop, while two set a feast.11 Then layer in the rest for speed, evergreen shelter, and autumn fire. A mixed young wood is a safe one — when the next imported disease arrives (one always arrives), diversity is the only insurance that has ever worked.

Built for exactly your soil — it thrives where the ground stays damp. A broad, generous giant that asks almost nothing once rooted, and the single most valuable thing you can plant for wildlife. The tree your great-grandchildren will sit beneath.

Bur oak — craggy and permanent



If the bur oak is the survivor, the white oak is the aristocrat — the classic, rounded, spreading oak of old Wisconsin savannas, with pale ridged bark and wine-red fall color. Slow, but a true cathedral tree, and its sweet acorns are prized by wildlife above almost any other.

White oak — the spreading savanna form



Unmistakable in maturity for its peeling, shaggy gray bark that curls off in long plates — a sculpture in winter and a five-star bat roost. The nuts are genuinely delicious (sweeter than store pecans), and the wood is the classic smoking and tool wood.

For the wet ground — where the rise meets the crease
Two more trees belong to the damp end of the property, and they are the two most people have never met: a birch that loves heat and wet feet, and the conifer that turns gold and lets go.
The birch for your conditions: it loves wet feet and is the one birch that laughs off the heat and clay that defeat paper birch here. Its peeling, cinnamon-and-cream bark is beautiful all winter, and its roots are superb at holding a slope or streambank against erosion — ideal where the ground falls toward the river.

The tree no one expects: a conifer that drops its needles. Soft and feathery green all summer, it turns a glowing pure gold in October, then sheds for winter. It's a true bog-and-wetland native, so save it for the lowest, wettest ground — near the crease — where almost nothing else conifer-like will grow.

Tamarack — the conifer that turns gold and lets go



This one is worth a tree’s life. The sap-feeding beetles that carry oak wilt — a fungus that can kill a healthy oak in a single season and then run underground from root to root through a whole grove — fly in spring and early summer, drawn to the smell of fresh-cut oak. A cut made in the dormant cold is safe; a cut made in June can be a death sentence. So save all oak pruning for winter, and if a storm tears an oak limb in the danger season, paint the wound that same hour to seal it.
Buy small and bare-root — a knee-high seedling costs a tenth as much as a balled tree, transplants with its root system intact, and overtakes the big transplant within five to eight years.13 Dig the hole wide and shallow, never deep: the root flare — the place the trunk swells into root — must sit at or slightly above grade. Water deeply through the first two summers, mulch in a wide flat doughnut (never a volcano against the bark), cage it the same day you plant it (chapter 14), and then stop helping. A native tree on the right soil wants neglect, and gets stronger on it.

How a whole wood is made
The box above tells you how to plant one tree. But a wood is not a sum of trees; it is a system that, once started, plants itself — and over the last half-century people have invented several genuinely different ways to start it. They run from the famous Japanese method that crams a forest into a parking space to the cheapest method of all, which is mostly to get out of the way. They are not equally suited to every patch of ground, and the honest news from the latest research is freeing: there is no single best way, the most expensive methods are often not the most diverse, and the strongest results usually come from mixing two or three to fit the site.56 Here are the ones worth knowing — the headline first.
The Miyawaki method — a forest in a hurry
The method carries the name of Akira Miyawaki (1928–2021), a Japanese botanist who spent the late 1950s in Germany learning a then-new idea: that any patch of ground has a potential natural vegetation — the particular community of plants that would return and hold there if people simply stopped interfering. Back in Japan he made an unsettling discovery. Hunting for his country’s true native forest, he found it almost nowhere except in the small untouched groves around old temples and shrines — the chinju no mori, spared for centuries because it was thought unlucky to cut them. By his reckoning only six-hundredths of one percent of Japan’s forest was still genuinely native; the rest was plantation cedar and cypress that foresters had spread over the centuries. The dark, mixed, broadleaf forest that belonged there had been all but erased.54
His chance to rebuild it came in the early 1970s from an unlikely patron: the Nippon Steel Corporation, whose conventional plantings on the raw embankments around its steelworks kept dying. Miyawaki surveyed the native forest around two nearby tombs, grew its species from seed, and planted them on the dead industrial ground — and they took. From that first success the method spread to more than thirteen hundred sites across Japan and, in his lifetime, to over seventeen hundred sites worldwide and some forty million trees: tsunami-buffer forests along the coast, woods raised on landfills and artificial islands, even a forest coaxed onto a cliff freshly blasted out for a power station.54
The recipe is exact, and it is the opposite of how you set a single specimen tree. You survey the ground’s potential natural vegetation and assemble a long list of its natives — not a handful but dozens, sorted into the four vertical layers of a real forest: a top canopy, a tree layer beneath it, a sub-tree layer, and a shrub layer. You dig the soil deep and feed it heavily with organic matter, because the method was built for dead ground. Then you plant very young seedlings — but ones with a living root system, their fungal partners already attached — extremely densely and completely at random: three to five little plants per square metre, scattered, never in rows. You mulch the whole bed thickly, weed and water it for two or three years — and then you stop, for good. Packed that tightly, the seedlings race one another upward for light, the weak die back, and the survivors close into a dense young thicket. Its champions say this yields a multi-layered young forest in twenty to thirty years where ordinary succession in temperate Japan would need a hundred and fifty to two hundred.54
That last promise is where an honest field guide has to slow down. The Miyawaki method is real, and it does some real things — dense shade and loosened soil genuinely make young plants shoot up fast — but the eye-catching numbers that travel with it (‘ten times faster,’ ‘thirty times more carbon,’ ‘a hundred times more biodiversity,’ ‘mature in twenty years’) have run well ahead of the evidence. A 2026 review in the Journal of Applied Ecology combed through fifty-one studies of the method and found that only about a third used a control plot to compare against, and almost none repeated their measurements; the famous claims came back rated from weakly supported to no empirical support at all, the ‘maturity in twenty to thirty years’ claim worst of them.55 When the method was first tried in the dry Mediterranean, the planting did end up rich in species — but between 61 and 84 percent of the trees had died within twelve years.54 It is expensive to start, too — on the order of three thousand euros per hundred square metres, once you count the nursery, the soil work, and all that dense stock.54 And it cannot conjure an old-growth forest; the worry among ecologists is that selling it as an instant, drop-in replacement for protecting the real thing becomes its own kind of greenwashing.54
None of which means don’t — it means know what it is for. The method was engineered for the worst ground imaginable: compacted, sterile, seedless urban fill with no forest anywhere near. Your situation is the reverse. You have living Manawa silt loam, a seed bank already in the soil, and remnant woods up and down the river ready to throw seed onto your land for nothing. On ground like that, the cheaper methods below often catch a Miyawaki planting within a decade. But as a deliberate experiment on one small patch — a sunny corner of the rise, or a strip along the road where you want a dense green screen and a burst of birdsong fast — it is a lovely thing to try. Build the four layers from the natives already in this book: swamp white and bur oak for the canopy; hackberry, basswood, and river birch below them; hazelnut, chokeberry, ninebark, serviceberry, and wild plum for the shrub layer. Set them three to a square metre, jumbled and random, mulch deep, water through two summers, then walk away and let them fight it out. Expect to lose a third to the crush — that thinning is the method working.
The other roads to a forest
Strip away the branding and most of the world’s reforesting is done by a handful of older, plainer methods — several of which cost a fraction of a Miyawaki bed and, on good ground like yours, do just as well. They sit along a single spectrum: at one end you plant everything yourself; at the other you plant almost nothing and let the land and its birds do the work. Here they are, the most hands-on first and the cheapest and wildest last.
The forester’s standard, and the picture most people carry of “planting trees”: one species, or a few, set out as seedlings in straight, evenly spaced rows. Fast, tidy, and cheap to mow and harvest — which is exactly why it rules commercial forestry and the Christmas-tree lot.

Instead of nursery seedlings, you sow the seed straight into the ground where the wood is to stand — acorns and nuts pressed into the fall soil, or, in the tropical version called muvuca, a broadcast mix of dozens of native species sown all at once like a cover crop.

Rather than blanket the whole opening, you plant a few small, dense islands of trees and shrubs scattered across it. Each island grows, fruits, shelters seedlings, and draws in birds, then spreads outward at its edges until the islands meet — mimicking the way a real meadow tips into forest in patches, not all at once.

The discovery of Australian agronomist Tony Rinaudo in 1980s Niger: the cheapest forest is the one already underground. Cut or grazed stumps, living roots, and seeds lie everywhere in ‘bare’ land; protect and prune their regrowth and a wood returns at almost no cost. The technique has regreened some five million hectares and 200 million trees across the Sahel.

A halfway house: you don’t plant, but you don’t merely wait either. You help the volunteers already appearing — freeing them from the competing grass, pulling the invaders that would smother them, fencing out the deer, mowing less. Study after study finds it about twice as cheap as planting and often richer in native species.

The oldest method and, where it works, the best by several measures: protect the ground and let the seed bank in the soil and the seed rain from neighbouring woods rebuild the forest on their own. Across the tropics, letting trees return naturally stores more carbon at lower cost than planting on nearly half of all sites.

The newest and largest comparisons all land in the same place: no single method wins, and a mix beats any one of them — the trick is to match the method to the patch.56 For a few acres of living Wisconsin loam beside a river full of seed, that argues for a mostly cheap and wild plan. Let the back edges regenerate naturally; assist the volunteers everywhere by weeding invaders and caging seedlings; direct-seed acorns where you want oaks; plant a few framework thickets — your berry shrubs and oaks — as islands for the birds to build out from; treat the resprouting brush with a little farmer-managed regeneration rather than the bulldozer; and, if you want one showpiece, try a single dense Miyawaki pocket in a sunny corner and watch it race. The forester’s straight rows are the one road this wood doesn’t need.
Forests the size of a yard
Everything above assumed you had acres to fill. Most people don’t — and this book is meant to travel up and down the street, to anyone with a patch of grass and the itch to grow something wilder. So here are the methods built for small ground, the kind a single afternoon and a single yard can hold. Take heart: a small wood is the easiest kind to make well, because you can give every tree your full attention — and because, as the last note explains, the small woods do not stay separate for long.
The Miyawaki method above, shrunk to a yard: a patch as small as a tennis court — six parking spaces — dug deep, enriched, and packed with six hundred-odd native saplings across dozens of species. Schools, towns, and neighbours across Europe and now North America are planting them on verges, playgrounds, and reclaimed lots; the ‘Tiny Forest’ movement is how the method reached ordinary yards.

A small woodland designed as edible layers, one stacked above the next. Robert Hart, gardening a quarter-acre in England in the 1960s, mapped seven of them: a fruit-tree canopy, a low layer of dwarf fruit and nut trees, a berry-shrub layer, herbs, ground-cover, root crops, and climbers running up the trunks. You tend it like a wood and harvest it like a garden.

Two ancient ways to take wood from a tree without killing it. Coppicing cuts it to the stump; pollarding cuts it above browse height; either way it resprouts a fistful of straight new poles, and the cycle repeats — some stools have been cut this way for centuries. A few hazels or willows in a corner give a perpetual crop of stakes, bean-poles, and kindling.

If the yard meets a creek, a ditch, or the river, the single most valuable thing to plant is a strip of trees and shrubs along the water. Even twenty-five to thirty-five feet of native woody cover filters the lawn’s runoff before it reaches the stream, anchors the bank against the next flood, and shades the water cool for the life inside it.

Here is why a field guide for one wood keeps talking about the yard next door. Our parks and preserves, the ecologist Doug Tallamy argues, are simply too small and too scattered to carry the wildlife we have left; the missing habitat — tens of millions of acres of it — is sitting under American lawns.10 His answer is the Homegrown National Park: not one big park, but a continent of small ones, stitched together a yard at a time. One planted yard connects to the next; a street becomes a corridor; a neighbourhood becomes a place a bird can cross.66 Whichever of these methods you or the people down the street choose — a tiny forest, a food forest, a single guild, a shared hedge — the planting counts twice: once for your own patch, and again as one more stepping-stone in a wood far larger than any of us owns. So pass the book along the street.
The layer that does the feeding.
Between the canopy and the grass runs the layer that actually runs the economy of a wood: the shrubs. They flower earlier than the trees, fruit heavier, and shelter nearly everything that hops, nests, or hides. The six shrubs and small trees in this chapter are the working class of the whole plan — and, not incidentally, four of them feed you too.

The same four-season tree from the open rise pulls double duty here: its June berries taste like a sweeter blueberry, eaten straight off the branch or baked into pie. You will be in a friendly race with the robins for them.

A handsome rounded shrub that hands you a real crop of sweet wild hazelnuts every late summer — if you beat the squirrels to them. Tough, undemanding, with burning orange-red fall color. Plant a few together for a good harvest and a living screen.

Great lacy heads of cream-white flowers in June become heavy clusters of dark berries in late summer — the makings of the famous immune-boosting syrup, jams, and wine. One important rule to pass on: cook elderberries before eating; the raw berries, leaves, and stems are not safe. Loves the damp lower edge near the crease.
Seed: Partly self-fertile, but two different bushes crop far more heavily.

Elderberry — late-summer clusters
A thicket-forming small tree that foams with white blossom in spring and drops tart-sweet red plums in late summer — superb in jam, where its natural pectin sets without help. The spring bloom alone earns its place; the fruit is a bonus.
Seed: Self-incompatible — needs a second plum nearby to set fruit (wild thickets fruit because they are seed-grown and genetically varied).

Staghorn sumac — the velvet antler

The colonizing shrub of every Wisconsin roadside, named for the dense velvet on its antler-shaped young branches. It spreads into open colonies, turns the most violent scarlet of anything in the autumn landscape, holds its red berry-cones through the winter for the birds — and those same cones are a spice and a drink you already know, which is the subject of chapter 10. Plant it where it may roam, or simply spare the one that volunteers.
Seed: spreads mostly by root into a clonal grove; male and female plants are separate, so only colonies with both set fruit.14
Most natives are self-fertile: a single plant will set viable seed all on its own. But a handful are self-incompatible — their flowers reject their own pollen, so they need a second, genetically different plant of the same species nearby before any seed will be viable. They still grow and bloom perfectly well as a lone specimen; it is only the seed that asks for a partner. So if your goal is a self-renewing, seed-setting colony rather than just a flower, plant two or three, not one.
To make this easy, every plant in this guide now carries a one-line Seed note. In the new group below, the ones that want company are Compass Plant, Prairie Dock, Swamp Milkweed and Butterfly Weed (all self-incompatible), with Creeping Jacob's Ladder leaning the same way; the rest will seed contentedly alone. And across the wider guide the same rule quietly catches a few more you already have: the other milkweeds, purple coneflower, yarrow, the asters and goldenrods, and — for fruit and nuts — pawpaw, hazelnut, wild plum, and the oaks and hickory. Everything else sets seed on its own.
Holding the hill
The north-facing slope is the one piece of ground that can wash away in a hard rain, and the fix is the same principle as everything else here: layer it. You want deep roots to anchor the soil and a living groundcover to take the raindrop’s hit before it can splash the earth loose. For the anchors, nothing beats prairie-grass roots that drive five to eight feet down — little bluestem above all, with side-oats grama and prairie dropseed — backed by the deep taproots of bur and swamp white oak and the fast fibrous mat of river birch. For the cover, the rule is that you must be able to walk the slope, so reach for the walkables: Pennsylvania sedge first (a soft four-to-eight-inch mat, happy in part shade, mowable once or twice a year), then creeping thyme on the sunny edges and native wild strawberry for an edible carpet. On a shaded slope the single best holder is the semi-evergreen Christmas fern, which keeps its fronds — and your soil — straight through winter. One caution, because it looks like it should help: wild columbine is not a soil-binder. It holds its own spot and self-seeds prettily into crevices, but it grows from a crown, not a running root, and it will not knit a slope shut.

Trees are the architecture of a wood; the meadow is its power plant. While the oaks spend decades getting tall, a few square yards of native prairie flowers will be running at full capacity by their second summer — pumping out nectar from April to hard frost, raising the caterpillars the birds need, and driving roots six, eight, ten feet into the ground, building soil and banking carbon the whole time.15 Nothing else in this book returns so much life for so little money so fast.
One rule organizes all of it: plant the bloom calendar, not the bouquet. A pollinator’s problem is not finding flowers in July — it is April and it is October. The eight flowers below were chosen so that something is always open: columbine for the first hummingbird home from the Gulf, beardtongue for the June bee rush, coneflower and bee balm through the high summer, and the asters holding the table until frost for every monarch still on the road south.16

The flower to start with — tough, long-blooming, beloved by butterflies all summer and by goldfinches all winter when its spiky seedheads ripen. Its root is the famous immune remedy echinacea, used by Plains peoples for wounds and infection long before it reached the pharmacy shelf. Leave the dead stalks standing through winter; the birds will thank you.

Purple coneflower — with a visiting monarch
Wild bee balm / bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) is the fourth pillar of the summer bloom — shaggy lavender crowns mobbed by hummingbirds, bumblebees, and the clearwing moth of chapter 17. Because its leaf is also the best medicine-cabinet tea on this land, its full card lives with the medicines in chapter 9.
A native milkweed without the spread — tidy clumps topped with brilliant orange. Like all milkweeds it is the only plant a monarch caterpillar can eat, so a few of these turn your yard into a monarch nursery in a year when the species needs every patch it can find. The blazing color is a bonus.

The quiet workhorses: native sedges
Sedges look like grass and are nothing of the kind — roll a stem in your fingers and feel the three sides; sedges have edges. They are the green thread that stitches a planting together: dense fibrous roots that hold soil and filter runoff, seed for sparrows and juncos, cover for frogs, and host duty for a whole family of little skipper butterflies.17 Plant them in drifts between the showier things and they knit the ground shut against weeds.

Pennsylvania sedge (Carex pensylvanica) is the dry-shade hero — a soft, flowing, ankle-high mat that makes the finest native no-mow lawn for the shaded parts of the rise. Tussock sedge (C. stricta) builds the classic raised pedestals of a healthy wet meadow — frog cover, in the wettest crease. Fox sedge (C. vulpinoidea), with seed heads like a fox’s brush, is the fast, tough stabilizer for a disturbed damp edge. Palm sedge (C. muskingumensis) is the ornamental one, little green palm trees for moist part shade. All four are wind-pollinated, spread on their own, and tend themselves for good.
You do not plant a meadow one flower at a time. The trick is dormant seeding: in late October or November, rake a patch of bare ground, scatter a Wisconsin native seed mix (look for one labeled for your region and sun level), and walk on it or roll it so the seed makes firm contact with the soil. Then do nothing. Winter's freeze-and-thaw works the seed in and breaks its dormancy — exactly as nature intended — and the first green appears in spring. Year one looks sparse and weedy; year two fills in; year three is a meadow. Mow it once each spring at a high setting and otherwise leave it be. Your next step: choose one sunny patch this fall, however small, and seed it — everything else in this guide will arrive on its own to use it.
Treasures to guard, never to dig
A last category, in case the land surprises you: Wisconsin’s rare woodland natives. They cannot be bought honestly and they do not survive digging, so the rule for every one of them is the same — protect the ground it stands on, keep the invasives off it, and tell no one who might take it.18

The small white lady’s slipper (Cypripedium candidum), state-threatened, takes a decade to flower and lives in partnership with a soil fungus — which is why a transplanted one almost always dies.18 The eastern prairie fringed orchid (Platanthera leucophaea) is federally threatened and pollinated only by night-flying hawkmoths.19 American ginseng and goldenseal have both been dug nearly out of the wild for the root trade — if you find either in your shade, guard it and buy cultivated.20 White trillium is still common but fragile: picking the flower removes the plant’s only leaves and can kill it. And wild lupine, though not yet rare, is the sole host of the endangered Karner blue butterfly — Wisconsin holds the world’s largest population, and every patch matters.21

Planting the green ribbon.
The crease asks for its own flora — plants that think wet feet are a feature. Stop mowing it, plant the five things below, and the dampest ten percent of your land will produce half its color, most of its birdsong, and all of its frogs.
Its secret is winter: when all else is brown and grey, its bare stems burn deep crimson against the snow — the most cheerful thing you can plant for a Wisconsin January. It loves the damp and binds the soil with a dense net of roots.
Seed: Spreads on its own by layering where stems touch the ground; for berries, two unrelated plants set far more seed.

Red-osier dogwood — winter stems
For the wettest pocket of the basin. In midsummer it covers itself in perfect white spheres — small fireworks — that draw clouds of butterflies from dawn to dusk. A strange and wonderful thing you will not have met before.
Seed: Self-fertile — a single shrub sets its round seed-heads.

Tuck these into the damp edge for color at eye level. Cardinal flower throws up spikes of impossible scarlet that hummingbirds cross the yard for; swamp milkweed feeds the monarchs on their long road south.

The milkweed for damp ground — your crease will adore it. Domed clusters of soft pink, vanilla-scented flowers stand over narrow leaves; a premier monarch host and nectar bar that, unlike common milkweed, stays in a tidy, polite clump.

A low band along the crease catches and cleans the rainwater before it leaves your land, and in autumn turns gold and bronze, moving like water in the wind. Plant once; they tend themselves.

Native sedge — gold in autumn
A planted drainage is a working water filter. The dense roots of sedge and dogwood slow each rain, hold the bank, and strip sediment and nutrients before the water leaves your land for the river — the same job, at yard scale, that wetlands do for whole watersheds.22 Everything downstream of you benefits from this one unmowed ribbon, and nothing about it requires maintenance beyond admiring it.
The Harvest
What the wood gives back: the table, the medicine shelf, and two tastes of home.
A wood that sets a table.
There is a particular pleasure, unknown to anyone who has only ever bought fruit, in eating something the land made without being asked. It is also the fastest way to fall in love with a piece of ground — a yard you harvest is a yard you visit daily, and a yard you visit daily is a yard you notice everything about. Your warm west slope is unusually good food country. The shrub crops — serviceberry, hazelnut, elderberry, wild plum — live back in chapter 5 with their kin; what follows is the rest of the menu.
The prize: pawpaw
The pawpaw is a small understory tree that drops fruit the size of a potato, with a creamy tropical flesh you eat with a spoon. It is pushing its range north, and warm river-valley slopes like yours are precisely the foothold it wants. Plant two or three — they need a neighbor of a different parent to set fruit — in a spot with afternoon shade their first few years. In autumn the leaves turn clear gold and the tree looks lit from within. Nothing else you can grow here will surprise your visitors more.
Seed: Self-incompatible — you must plant two genetically different trees for fruit (a root-sucker patch is a single clone and will not fruit alone).

The free fruit: wild brambles
The easiest harvest in any Wisconsin wood, and yes — they are genuinely native here. Black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis), our wild red raspberry (Rubus idaeus), and common blackberry (Rubus allegheniensis) all grow wild across the state, springing up on their own wherever sun meets a disturbed edge — exactly the conditions of a new wood like yours. They are arching, prickly canes that fruit on second-year wood, so each cane grows one year and bears the next. Tell them apart at picking time: a black raspberry pulls off its core hollow like a little cap (and its canes have a chalky blue-white bloom); a blackberry keeps its solid white core inside, staying firm and glossy; the red raspberry is the sweet-tart red one, also hollow when picked. All three are superb fresh, frozen, or in pies and jam; the flowers feed pollinators, and the thorny thickets give nesting birds and rabbits cover. Give them a sunny corner where you don't mind a thicket, cut out the dead second-year canes each winter, and they will feed you for free every July.

The forest tree that feeds everyone
The largest of the native cherries and a true forest tree, not just an edge shrub — it can rise 50 to 80 feet. In late spring it hangs long, drooping racemes of small white flowers; by late summer these become strings of pea-sized cherries that ripen from red to a deep purple-black. Raw, they are bittersweet and a little astringent; cooked, they make a famous dark jam, syrup, and country wine, and they are a feast for dozens of bird species. The mature bark is unmistakable — dark gray-black and broken into small, curling, scaly plates that foragers call “burnt cornflakes.” One rule to pass on, the same as for all stone fruit: the leaves, twigs, and pits contain cyanide compounds and are not to be eaten — use only the ripe flesh, and keep wilted branches away from livestock. A magnificent shade tree that feeds you and the birds both.
Seed: Largely self-incompatible — best fruit with another cherry nearby (rarely a problem, as they grow everywhere).



What arrives on its own
The best courses can’t be planted at all. They come when the wood has what they need — shade, damp, and a deep leaf floor — which makes them the patient person’s reward for chapters 11 and 18.
The great delicacy of the northern spring woods — a wild oniony-garlic green that chefs prize and that carpets shady damp ground once the canopy returns. Harvest gently, only a few from each patch, and they will spread for generations.
Seed: Spreads by bulb offsets on its own; a colony also sets seed for slow, patient spread.

Ramps — the spring delicacy
The most famous wild mushroom in the Midwest, appearing for a few weeks in late April and May, often near old elms and ash. You cannot plant them, only hunt them — but a wood with deadfall and rich soil is where they choose to come. A spring tradition worth waiting years for.
Seed: Not a plant at all — it has no seed. The morel fruits from an underground web of fungal threads, when warmth and a partner thread decide the time is right.

Ramps (wild leeks)
Coming new to all this, hold one rule above the rest: never eat any wild plant or mushroom unless you are completely certain of it. A few lookalikes are dangerous. Start with the things you plant yourself — pawpaw, hazelnut, plum, cooked elderberry — and learn the wild foods slowly, one at a time, with a good local guide or a knowledgeable friend. The caution is part of the pleasure; it teaches you to look closely.

The wider table
Beyond the headline crops, a restored wood quietly sets a much longer table — if you know where to look. The berries run from wild strawberry through serviceberry, elderberry, chokecherry, and hawthorn (serviceberry and elderberry pay off fastest, by year two or three). The nuts are slower and more work — hickory, acorns from your own oaks, the messy-but-generous black walnut. Down at ground level wait the roots and shoots — ramps, wild onion, Jerusalem artichoke, cattail rhizomes in the wet — and the wild greens most people pull as weeds: chickweed, lamb’s quarters, purslane, wood sorrel, and violet leaves and flowers both. A few carry a catch worth respecting: eat only the ripe fruit of mayapple and nothing else of that plant, and cook elderberries always. And in the very first warm days, before the ferns unroll, comes the prize of the shade — the tightly-coiled fiddlehead of the ostrich fern. (“Fiddlehead” is only the shape, a violin’s scroll; the botanist’s word is crozier, and every fern on the property passes through it.) Pick them tight, cook them through, and never take them all.

A wood can do something gentler than feed the body: it can feed memory. Most of what grows along the Nile cannot survive a Wisconsin January — the date palm, the olive, and the pomegranate belong to a kinder latitude. But two tastes of home are within reach of this slope, and one of them, wonderfully, turns out to have been a Wisconsin native all along.
Sumac — the spice that was already here

The tart crimson dust on your hummus, the sour note in za’atar — that is ground sumac fruit, and the Mediterranean shrub that supplies it (Rhus coriaria) has a hardy Wisconsin cousin growing wild on every roadside: staghorn sumac, whose upright red berry-cones can be dried and ground into the very same lemony spice, or steeped cold into a pink lemonade the early settlers drank all summer.14
One identification note, for confidence: the edible native carries its fuzzy red berries in dense upright cones. Poison sumac — a different plant, of swamps only — hangs loose clusters of white berries. Red and upright: that simple rule is all the safety you need here, and chapter 12 covers its pale cousin in full.23
The fig — not native, but persuadable

Honesty first: a fig in Wisconsin is a project, not a planting. But the cultivar 'Chicago Hardy' was selected for exactly this gamble — its top dies back in a hard winter, its roots survive, and it fruits on the new wood by late summer. Give it the warmest microclimate you own (against a south-facing wall on your west slope), mulch the roots deep before snow, or grow it in a pot and let it winter in the garage. It is the one plant in this book that asks for real fuss — and the only one that can put a sun-warm fig in your hand a few thousand miles from the Nile. It earns its place not as a native, but as a bridge.24
The Keeping

Leave the leaves. Keep the fallen wood.

Here is the chapter that costs nothing, takes no time, and does more for your wood than any purchase in this book: stop cleaning up. A forest is not only what stands; it is everything lying down. The leaf litter is where fireflies pass the winter as larvae, where the moths that feed the May warblers wait out the cold, where toads and salamanders shelter — and it rots into the black, sweet soil that feeds the oaks for free.25 Rake the lawn if you must; rake it into the wood and the crease, and let it lie. You are not making a mess. You are making earth.
Keep a few logs on the ground
A fallen log is the single most alive object in a forest. Drag two or three into the shade of the crease and simply let them rot: beetle grubs for the woodpeckers, hollows for the chipmunks and toads, moss, and — best of all — the slow bloom of fungus. A standing dead trunk, where it threatens nothing, is better still: a snag is an apartment house with a waiting list of woodpeckers, owls, and wood ducks.26 Deadwood is not decay so much as one life being handed, patiently, into many.
The quiet beauty underfoot
You do not plant fungus and you cannot rush it — you keep the logs and the litter and it arrives, threading the whole floor into one connected body. Treat what follows as a guide to noticing. Which mushrooms you get depends on which wood is rotting:

And a word of care, since all of this is new country: admire freely, eat nothing you cannot identify with total certainty. Deadly look-alikes grow in Wisconsin, and a local mycological society is the only safe teacher for anything bound for a plate.27 The pleasure of this chapter is in the looking.
The impossible colors of an old wood
This is the secret reward of letting wood lie for years: the forest begins to paint. None of these are tropical rarities — every one appears on decaying logs across Wisconsin’s older woods, each tied to its own kind of rot.28 There is no better argument for leaving deadwood where it falls.

The log pile, alive
The fallen wood you are leaving on the ground is not just texture for the forest floor — it is the base of an entire economy. Stack a few logs in a damp, shaded spot and you have started a fungus farm whether you meant to or not. Different woods keep different hours: oak is the slow, dense workhorse (six to ten years of rot, and the wood of choice for turkey tail, reishi, lion’s mane, and shiitake); birch rots fast and fruits spectacularly; soft poplar and willow give oyster mushrooms in a year or two; and the region’s dead ash, killed in its millions by the emerald ash borer, makes superb oyster wood. If you ever want to cultivate on purpose, wine caps, oyster, shiitake, lion’s mane and reishi are the beginner’s set, and Field & Forest Products up in Peshtigo will sell you the spawn.
Whether you cultivate or not, the chain running off that rotting wood is the quiet engine of the whole yard: dead wood feeds fungi, fungi feed insects, and insects feed the birds, salamanders, and small mammals — which feed the foxes and owls. A fungus-softened log becomes beetle larvae becomes a woodpecker’s winter; red squirrels dry mushrooms in the forks of trees against the cold; mice and turkeys and thrushes take their share and scatter the spores onward. Pull the fungi out of that picture and every link downstream goes hungry.
One absolute rule before you eat anything you grow or find: the deadly look-alikes — destroying angel, deadly galerina (which favors exactly the rotting wood you’ll be working), death cap, jack-o’-lantern — kill people every year. Never eat on a photo-match or an app’s say-so; take a spore print and confirm several features, or have it checked by the Wisconsin Mycological Society. Every plant in this chapter wins the same way: it leafs out before the natives wake, nothing here has evolved to eat it, and several of them poison the very soil against their neighbors. Left alone, each one ends in monoculture — acres of a single foreign plant where a hundred species lived, and with the plants go the insects, then the birds. The good news fits in one sentence: on a lot this size, a person with gloves, a spade, and this chapter wins. You will fight them on a slow walk twice a year, mostly without a drop of herbicide — and where chemicals genuinely earn their place, each card says exactly how to use the least of them to the most effect.29
The most important sentence in this book: wear gloves for every weed, every time, no exceptions. You will not always recognize what you are gripping — especially as a winter stem or a seedling — and the plants that blister do not announce themselves. Thick gauntlet gloves, long sleeves, long pants; wash up afterward with cool water and dish soap, and wash the gloves and clothes separately. Four plants below deserve special fear — three carry a rash oil that lives on tools and dog fur for months, and one carries a sap that burns and can blind. Learn those four faces before you clear anything, and treat every unfamiliar “leaves of three” as off-limits until proven otherwise.
First, the four that can hurt you



Poison Ivy
Toxicodendron radicansThe one every member of the household should know by heart. The rule is “leaves of three, let it be”: each stem carries three leaflets, the middle one held out on a longer stalk, glossy and often reddish in spring, turning brilliant scarlet in fall. It grows three ways — as a low groundcover, a small shrub, and a hairy, rope-like vine that climbs trees (the fuzzy aerial roots are a dead giveaway, and the bare winter vine is just as toxic as the summer leaf). In late summer it hangs clusters of small, pale waxy-white berries. Every part of the plant, in every season, carries urushiol, an oil that causes a fierce, itchy, blistering rash; the oil clings to gloves, tools, boots, and dog fur for months, so people are often caught out days later by gear they never cleaned. Burning it is genuinely dangerous — the smoke carries urushiol straight into the lungs.
How it spreads: Birds eat the pale berries and plant it everywhere, and it also creeps outward by root — so it returns from seed and from runners both.
How to remove it
Best removed in early spring or late fall when the oil is slightly less concentrated, but it is toxic year-round; always protect skin completely.
Wearing nitrile gloves under thick gauntlet gloves, long sleeves, and long pants, grip low and pull slowly so the roots come with the stem; the soil is easiest to work after rain. Bag everything in a sealed contractor bag — do not compost. Wash skin within two hours with cool water and dish soap (which cuts the oil), and run tools and gloves through the same wash separately.
For a patch you cannot dig, mow or cut it to the ground (gloved, with a covered blade), then lay cardboard topped with 4–6 inches of mulch or wood chips over the whole area and leave it a full season. Starved of light, the roots exhaust themselves.
On a climbing vine, sever it at the base and again at shoulder height, removing the cut section; leave the upper stub on the tree to die in place rather than handling toxic vine overhead. Cut any resprouts every few weeks — persistence eventually drains the root.
On a large infestation, browsing goats will eat poison ivy readily and are immune to the oil — a genuine option for an overrun back acre.
A glyphosate or triclopyr herbicide, mixed per the label and painted or carefully spot-sprayed onto the leaves on a still, dry day, will kill it; triclopyr is the more reliable on woody vines. Avoid drift onto desirable plants and never spray near the water of your crease.
For a thick climbing vine, cut it low and immediately (within a minute) paint the fresh stump with concentrated triclopyr; this puts the chemical exactly where you want it and nowhere else.



Poison Sumac
Toxicodendron vernixThe most potent of the rash-causing plants on this continent, and one to watch for right in your damp crease and along the river edge, because it loves wet, boggy ground. It is a tall shrub or small tree carrying rows of 7–13 leaflets with smooth, untoothed edges on reddish stems, and in late summer it hangs loose clusters of small, pale, drooping berries. Learn this picture, because there is a harmless look-alike: native staghorn sumac, which is a welcome plant, has toothed leaflet edges and bright-red berries held in dense, upright cones — the opposite of poison sumac's smooth edges and pale, hanging fruit. Like poison ivy, every part carries the oil urushiol, which clings to gloves, tools, and fur and causes a severe blistering rash; the reaction tends to be stronger than from poison ivy. Never burn it.
How it spreads: Bird-spread by its pale berries and colony-forming by root in wet ground — expect it back from both.
How to remove it
Tackle it in late fall or winter dormancy when handling is safest; it is toxic in every season, so cover all skin.
On a young shrub, wearing full skin protection, dig a wide circle and lever out the entire root crown — it resprouts from roots left behind. Bag and trash it sealed; never compost or chip it. Wash skin, tools, and clothing separately with cool water and dish soap.
On an established plant too large to dig, cut it to the ground and then cut every resprout as it appears through the season; with no leaves to feed it, the root starves over one to two years.
After cutting low, cap the stump and surrounding soil with cardboard and a deep mulch layer to block regrowth and exhaust the roots.
The most effective and most contained method for a tree-sized plant: cut the trunk low and immediately paint the fresh cut surface with concentrated triclopyr or glyphosate. Because it grows in wet ground, use an aquatic-approved formulation and keep all chemical out of standing water.
On multi-stemmed shrubs, an oil-based triclopyr applied as a band around the lower 12–18 inches of each stem is absorbed through the bark without cutting — useful where cutting would splatter sap.



Poison Oak
Toxicodendron pubescensGenuinely rare in Wisconsin — you are far more likely to meet poison ivy or poison sumac here — but worth knowing so your eye is complete. Like poison ivy it grows leaflets in threes, but they are lobed with rounded edges, resembling a small oak leaf, and are often slightly fuzzy underneath; it usually grows as a low shrub rather than a climbing vine. It carries the same blistering oil, urushiol, which clings to skin, gloves, tools, and dog fur and can deliver a rash days after contact. If you spent time out West you already know it; here in the upper Midwest, the safest rule is to treat any unfamiliar “leaves of three” you cannot confidently identify as off-limits until you are sure. Never burn it — the smoke carries the oil.
How it spreads: Spreads by bird-dropped seed and by underground runners that send up fresh stems.
How to remove it
If found, remove in spring or fall with full skin protection; toxic in all seasons.
Because it is usually a small, shallow-rooted shrub here, gloved hand-pulling after rain — taking the whole root crown — is often enough. Bag and trash sealed; wash skin and gear separately with cool water and dish soap.
Cut to the ground and clip every resprout through the season to starve the root over a year or two.
Cap the cut crown with cardboard and deep mulch to block light and finish the roots.
For a stubborn plant, a triclopyr product either spot-sprayed on the leaves or painted on a freshly cut stump is effective; spot-treat only, and keep it away from the plants and water you want to protect.



Giant Hogweed
Heracleum mantegazzianumThe single most dangerous plant in this guide, and the one to teach the entire household to recognize on sight. It is a towering plant, often eight to fourteen feet tall, with a thick, hollow, purple-blotched and bristly stem and enormous umbrella-shaped clusters of white flowers up to two feet across — like a monstrous Queen Anne's lace. Its watery sap does not cause an allergic rash like the urushiol plants; instead, on skin touched by sunlight it causes severe chemical burns, blistering, and scarring that can last for years, and permanent blindness if it reaches the eyes. It is rare in Wisconsin and a state-prohibited species. Do not confuse it with native cow parsnip, which is smaller, has a green ridged stem, and is far less harmful — but when in any doubt, keep your distance. This is the one plant on this list you should not remove yourself.
How it spreads: A single plant can fling up to 100,000 seeds and then dies — kill it before it flowers, and know the seed stays alive in the soil for years.
How to remove it
Do not attempt removal yourself. Report and let trained crews act, ideally in spring before it sets seed.
Because of the blinding-burn risk and its prohibited status, the correct first step is to report any suspected plant to the Wisconsin DNR or your county invasive-species coordinator. Photograph it from a safe distance for identification; trained crews have the protective equipment this plant demands.
If you must act on a single small plant and have full chemical-resistant coveralls, goggles, and a face shield, the root crown can be severed several inches below the soil with a spade and the whole plant sealed in heavy bags for landfill — never composted. Most homeowners should leave this to professionals.
Crews typically treat with a glyphosate or triclopyr application to the foliage or freshly cut stem; this is not a job for casual spraying because any sap contact during the work is dangerous.
The sixteen invaders, ranked by menace



Garlic Mustard
Alliaria petiolataIf you pull only one plant in your life, pull this. Garlic mustard is the most destructive invader of the eastern woodland floor, and it works in three ways at once. First, it leafs out weeks before the native spring wildflowers, stealing the brief window of sunlight they need before the canopy closes — they simply never get a turn. Second, it is allelopathic: its roots leach compounds (sinigrin and alliarinoside) that kill the mycorrhizal fungi in the soil — the underground threads that native trees and wildflowers depend on to draw water and nutrients. Strip out those fungi and the natives cannot establish even after the mustard is gone. And because nothing here evolved to eat it, it has no natural predators to hold it back. The result is a silent green monoculture where a diverse forest floor used to be. Its cruelest trick is reserved for a butterfly: the rare West Virginia White lays its eggs on garlic mustard by mistake, because the plant chemically mimics the native toothwort she evolved to use — but the leaves are toxic to her caterpillars, so every egg is a lost generation. You will know the plant by the sharp garlic smell when you crush a leaf, the scalloped heart-shaped lower leaves, and the small four-petalled white flowers on a stalk in its second spring.
How it spreads: Self-pollinating — one lone plant can seed an entire new patch. Pull it before the slender pods ripen, every time.
How to remove it
Pull in April and May of its second year, the moment you see white flowers and before the slender seed pods ripen — one plant drops hundreds of seeds that stay viable for up to a decade.
The shallow taproot lifts easily, especially after rain. Grip at the base and pull steadily so the whole white root comes up — any crown left behind will rebloom. This is the single best method and is satisfying, fast work.
Pulled plants can still ripen and drop seed from the cut stem, so seal everything in bags for the landfill. Do not compost and do not leave piles on the ground.
Where roots are too dense to pull, sever each plant right at ground level with a knife or string trimmer just as it flowers; cutting below the lowest leaves stops most plants from re-flowering that year. Repeat on any that recover.
A controlled spring burn (where local rules and conditions allow) before native plants emerge will scorch the rosettes and the seed on the surface; it is most useful on larger established stands.
Because the seed bank lasts years, plan to walk the same ground each spring until the new seedlings dwindle — usually three to five seasons clears a patch for good.
For a heavy infestation, a 1–2% glyphosate solution applied to the green rosettes in very early spring or late fall — when natives are dormant but garlic mustard is actively growing — kills it with little collateral damage. Spot-treat; do not broadcast.



Common & Glossy Buckthorn
Rhamnus cathartica / Frangula alnusThe dominant woodland invader of southeast Wisconsin, and a textbook ecosystem-wrecker. Like garlic mustard, it leafs out earliest and holds its leaves latest, casting such dense shade across the whole growing season that almost nothing native can survive beneath it. It is allelopathic too — its tissues leach emodin, which suppresses native seed germination and poisons the soil; its nitrogen-rich leaf litter then rewrites the soil chemistry and drives out the mycorrhizal fungi the oaks depend on. Its black berries act as a laxative on birds, which scatter the seed everywhere, and with no natural enemies here it spreads unchecked. You will know it by the glossy oval leaves with curved parallel veins, the small black berries in late summer, the orange inner bark revealed by a scrape, and (on common buckthorn) a sharp thorn at many twig tips. Removing it is the single highest-value thing you can do for this land.
How it spreads: Male and female are separate plants — only the females fruit, so clearing them first cuts the seed rain; cut stumps also resprout fiercely.
How to remove it
Cut and treat any time the ground is workable; late fall and winter are ideal, because the stumps are easy to see and there is no leaf litter to clear — and herbicide on a stump still works in cold weather.
Seedlings and stems up to about half an inch thick pull cleanly after rain, or lever out with a weed wrench / “buckthorn puller” that grips the trunk and uses leverage to lift the whole root.
On a big trunk you cannot pull, cut a continuous ring through the bark and the green cambium just beneath it all the way around, two bands a few inches apart near the base. This severs the tree's plumbing; it leafs out one last time, then dies standing over a year or two without any chemical — a clean, herbicide-free option.
Cut the trunk a couple of feet above the ground, then slip a heavy black buckthorn bag (or doubled trash bag) over the cut stump and zip-tie or tape it tightly around the base. Sealed in darkness, the stump cannot photosynthesize the resprouts it sends up, and it exhausts itself over a season or two. Leave the bag on until the stump is dead.
For a moderate trunk, cut it low and then dig and lever out the root crown; buckthorn resprouts ferociously from a bare stump, so removing the crown is what stops it.
If you simply cut and walk away it will resprout into a multi-stem bush, but cutting every new sprout two or three times a season for two years will eventually starve even a large root.
The standard professional method: cut the trunk low and, within a minute of cutting, paint the outer ring of the fresh stump with concentrated glyphosate (20–25%) or triclopyr. This kills the root with a tiny, targeted amount of chemical and prevents all resprouting. Works even in late fall and winter.
On stems up to about 6 inches, an oil-based triclopyr painted as a band around the lower 12–18 inches of bark is taken up without any cutting — efficient for a dense stand of poles.



Bush Honeysuckle
Lonicera maackii / tatarica / morrowiiArching, multi-stemmed shrubs that share buckthorn's whole playbook. They leaf out absurdly early and drop their leaves late, shading out the forest floor before natives wake and after they sleep, and with no predators to check them they form dense thickets that exclude everything else. Their paired tubular flowers (white to pink, fading yellow) become bright red berries that look like a feast but are nutritional junk food — migrating birds that fill up on them arrive at their next stop malnourished, so the shrub doesn't just displace plants, it weakens the animals passing through. You will know it by the paired leaves on arching stems, the paired flowers and berries, and a key tell: the older stems are hollow, with a brown pith, unlike our solid-stemmed native shrubs.
How it spreads: Self-compatible and bird-spread — one bush can seed the whole woodlot, and cut stems resprout.
How to remove it
Cut and treat in fall or winter for easy access; pull small plants in spring after rain. Act before the late-summer berries ripen to stop the birds spreading it.
Because the root system is shallow and fibrous, seedlings and small shrubs pull out completely by hand after rain, or lever out with a weed wrench — far easier than buckthorn.
On a medium shrub, cut back the top to see what you're doing, then dig and lever out the whole root crown; honeysuckle resprouts from a bare cut stump, so the crown must come out.
Cut the stems a foot or two up and seal the cut stump inside a heavy black bag zip-tied at the base; deprived of light, the resprouts die and the root starves over a season.
Cut the whole shrub to the ground and then clip every resprout through the season; two years of this starves even a large multi-stem clump.
In a fire-adapted setting, a spring burn top-kills seedlings and small shrubs and is useful as part of restoring an oak savanna.
Cut each stem low and immediately paint the fresh cut with concentrated glyphosate or triclopyr; the most reliable kill for a large established shrub, with minimal chemical.
Low thickets of seedlings and resprouts can be spot-sprayed with a glyphosate or triclopyr solution while in leaf; spray late in the season when the shrub is moving sugars (and the chemical) down to the roots.



Oriental Bittersweet
Celastrus orbiculatusA twining vine that is one of the few invaders able to kill a mature tree outright. It spirals up trunks and strangles them, and its sheer weight pulls grown trees down — turning closed canopy into gaps that more invasives then flood. It has no natural controls here and resprouts ferociously. You will know it by the round, finely toothed leaves, the vine winding clockwise up its host, and above all by the fruit: clusters of round capsules that split open to reveal bright orange shells around scarlet berries. (Our harmless native American bittersweet carries its fruit only at the branch tips, not strung along the stem.) Those showy berried stems are sold for autumn wreaths, which is a leading way the plant escapes into the wild — so never decorate with them, and never compost them.
How it spreads: Mostly separate male and female vines; birds spread the seed and the roots sucker — cut and treat every stem.
How to remove it
Cut the vines in late summer or fall, when the plant is drawing sugars down to its roots and herbicide travels furthest; pull seedlings any time after rain.
Young vines and shallow roots pull out after rain; trace each vine back to its rooting point and lift the whole root, or the fragment left behind will resprout.
Sever each vine at the base and again at about chest height, removing the middle section so it cannot rejoin. Leave the high portion to wither in the canopy rather than ripping it down and damaging the tree. Pull or dig the rooted base.
The root is yellow-orange and obvious; on a manageable plant, dig and lever out as much of it as you can — every bit left will try to resprout, so follow up.
Where digging isn't possible, cut every resprout at the base several times a season; two to three years of relentless cutting drains even a large root.
Bag and trash all cut fruiting stems; a single discarded wreath can seed a new infestation.
The most effective control: cut the vine low and immediately paint the fresh stump with concentrated triclopyr or glyphosate. Because bittersweet resprouts so aggressively, the stump treatment is what actually finishes it.
Where vines sprawl as low groundcover, spot-spray the foliage with triclopyr in late summer; avoid the leaves of the host tree.



Purple Loosestrife
Lythrum salicariaTall, pretty spikes of magenta flowers in wet ground — and the clearest example on this list of how an invader builds a monoculture. A single plant produces two to three million seeds a year, and with no native insects or diseases to slow it, it converts living, diverse wetland into a solid stand of nothing but loosestrife: no open water, no native sedges, no habitat for the frogs and birds that depended on them. You will know it by the showy spikes of six-petalled magenta-purple flowers in mid to late summer, the square-ish stems, and the lance-shaped leaves arranged in pairs or whorls up the stalk. Because it lives in your damp crease and at the river edge, control here must protect the water.
How it spreads: One plant makes two to three million seeds a year and also roots from broken stems — never let it set seed.
How to remove it
Dig or pull before flowering (June–July) to stop seed set; if it has already flowered, cut and bag the seed heads first, then treat the plant.
On a few plants, dig the entire root mass — loosestrife resprouts from root fragments, so be thorough. Do this before flowering, and bag every seed head; the seeds are dust-fine and float, so handle them over a tarp.
If it is already in bloom, the priority is to stop the seed: clip every flower spike into a bag before doing anything else, then deal with the roots. Trash the seed heads sealed — never compost.
On a stand too large to dig, cut it to the base before each flowering and again whenever it tries to rebloom; starved of seed-set and leaf, it weakens over several years.
For a true wetland infestation, Wisconsin has an established program releasing host-specific Galerucella leaf beetles that eat only purple loosestrife and have knocked back large stands statewide — ask your county or the DNR whether beetles are available for a serious patch.
Near water you must use an aquatic-approved glyphosate formulation; spot-spray or wipe it onto the foliage of individual plants on a still day, keeping every drop off the open water and off your native sedges and cardinal flower.
On older plants with a tough crown, cut the stems and paint the cut surfaces with aquatic glyphosate for a targeted, low-volume kill.



Japanese Knotweed
Reynoutria japonicaBamboo-like hollow stems, broad heart- to shovel-shaped leaves, and frothy sprays of small creamy-white flowers in late summer. It forms impenetrable single-species thickets, spreads from a root fragment the size of a fingernail, and can push through asphalt and house foundations. With nothing here to eat or check it, a few stems become a wall of knotweed that shades out everything. You will know it by the jointed, hollow, reddish-speckled canes (it looks like bamboo but isn't), the zig-zag stem with leaves alternating at each node, and the creamy flower plumes. This is the hardest plant on the list to kill, because its roots run deep and far, so the cardinal rule is: do not mow, chip, or rototill it, and do not move the soil — every fragment becomes a new plant.
How it spreads: Spreads almost entirely by rhizome and stem fragments — a thumbnail of root starts a new clone, so never cut and move it.
How to remove it
Cut stems through the summer to weaken the root, then make the decisive treatment in late summer or early fall (August–September), when the plant is pumping its reserves — and any herbicide — down into the roots.
Cut every cane to the ground every two to three weeks through the entire growing season, for several years running. You will not win in one year, but relentless cutting steadily starves the root system. Bag and trash or dry-to-death all cuttings on a tarp — never compost or chip them.
Cut the stand to the ground in spring, then cover the entire area with heavy black plastic or thick tarp weighted down and overlapping well past the edges; leave it sealed for one to two full growing seasons. Light starvation plus cutting is the strongest chemical-free approach.
Hand-digging works only if you remove every scrap of the rhizome, which is rarely practical on an established stand; on a brand-new single shoot, dig wide and deep and bag everything.
Because a fingernail of root regrows, never let cut material, soil, or tools carry fragments elsewhere; clean boots and blades on site.
The most effective control is a glyphosate (or for larger stands, a glyphosate + imazapyr) foliar application in late summer/early fall when sugars flow to the roots; cutting the stand earlier in the year and letting it regrow to about knee height before spraying improves the kill.
For a stand near desirable plants or water, each hollow cane can be cut and a measured dose of concentrated glyphosate injected or poured into the open stem — this delivers chemical straight to the root with almost no off-target exposure (use aquatic-approved product near the crease).



Reed Canary Grass
Phalaris arundinaceaA tall, coarse, cool-season grass that takes over wet ground — exactly your damp crease — and chokes out every native sedge and wildflower until the wetland is a flat, dense, sterile monoculture of grass. It builds a thick thatch and a mat of rhizomes that almost nothing else can break through, and it is restricted in Ozaukee County. You will know it by its height (often 3–6 feet), the broad flat blue-green blades, and the narrow flower head that is tightly closed at first and then opens into an airy, branched, straw-colored spray in early summer. The aim here is to keep it out of your wet seam so the red-osier dogwood and native sedges can hold that ground instead.
How it spreads: Spreads by both rhizome and seed — a single stand creeps outward relentlessly.
How to remove it
Hit it hard in late spring and again in early fall, when it is growing fastest; small new patches are far easier to stop than an established mat.
A new clump can be dug out entirely, rhizomes and all, before it knits into a mat; bag the material and watch the spot for resprouts.
Cut or mow the patch low, then cover it with heavy black plastic or thick mulch over cardboard for a full growing season to bake and starve the rhizomes; replant the bare ground immediately with vigorous natives so the grass can't simply return.
Cutting it low several times a season weakens the rhizomes over time and, crucially, stops it seeding; combine with planting tall native competitors to shade it out.
Because it needs full sun, establishing shrubs like red-osier dogwood and a dense planting of native sedges along the crease will, over years, shade and crowd it into retreat.
In suitable wetland-edge settings, a late-spring burn after it greens up but before natives are tall sets it back and favors the natives; follow local burn rules.
In or near the wet crease, spot-treat with an aquatic-labeled glyphosate in early fall when the grass is moving reserves to its roots; a spring mow followed by a fall spray on the regrowth is the most effective combination. Keep all chemical out of standing water.



Autumn Olive
Elaeagnus umbellataA large, fast shrub once planted for wildlife and erosion control and now a runaway across old fields and edges. Its real damage is invisible: it fixes nitrogen, fertilizing the very soil that natives are adapted to find lean, which tilts the whole playing field toward fast, weedy invaders and away from the natives that belong. With no predators it spreads quickly by bird-sown seed. You will know it by the distinctive leaves — green above but silvery-scaled and shimmering underneath — by the silvery young twigs, the fragrant pale flowers in spring, and the speckled silver-and-red berries it carries in abundance in fall.
How it spreads: Self-fertile and bird-spread — one shrub can seed an open field.
How to remove it
Cut and treat in late summer through winter; pull seedlings any time after rain. Get it before the fall berries feed the birds.
Small plants pull out readily after rain; the root is not as deep as buckthorn's, so a weed wrench lifts surprisingly large stems whole.
On a medium shrub, cut the top back for access, then dig and lever out the entire crown — it resprouts vigorously from any stump left in the ground.
Cut the stems a foot or two up and seal the cut stump in a heavy black bag zip-tied at the base; with no light, the resprouts die and the root exhausts itself over a season.
Cut to the ground and clip every resprout through the season for two years to starve a large root system.
Cut each stem low and immediately paint the fresh cut with concentrated glyphosate or triclopyr — the standard, reliable kill that prevents the aggressive resprouting.
On smaller stems, an oil-based triclopyr banded around the lower bark is absorbed without cutting and is efficient on a dense patch.



Japanese Barberry
Berberis thunbergiiA dense, spiny low shrub with small spoon-shaped leaves (often burgundy in cultivated forms), single sharp spines along the stems, and bright-red oval berries that hang on into winter. Beyond shading out natives, its humid interior thickets shelter the mice and the ticks that carry Lyme disease, measurably raising infection risk wherever it spreads — a genuine human-health reason to remove it on top of the ecological one. You will know it by the small clustered leaves, the single spines (not the triple spines of some natives), the inner wood that is bright yellow when scratched, and the red berries in fall and winter.
How it spreads: Self-fertile and bird-spread, and it roots where branches touch — one plant becomes a thicket.
How to remove it
Easiest to remove in early spring or late fall when you can see the structure; the shallow root makes this one of the more satisfying shrubs to clear.
Barberry's root system is shallow and fibrous, so even sizable shrubs lift out whole with a weed wrench or by hand after rain — wear thick gloves and long sleeves for the spines. This usually gets the entire plant in one go.
Where a wrench won't bite, dig a circle and lever out the root crown; removing the crown prevents the modest resprouting it can attempt.
A propane weed-torch passed over the base of a small barberry (in safe, damp, non-fire-risk conditions) kills the cambium and the plant without chemicals — a recognized barberry technique because the shrub is low and the root shallow.
Cut to the ground and clip resprouts a couple of times a season to finish any root left behind.
For the occasional stubborn crown, cut low and paint the fresh stump with concentrated glyphosate or triclopyr.
Carpets of barberry seedlings under a parent plant can be spot-sprayed with a triclopyr or glyphosate solution while in leaf.



Dame's Rocket
Hesperis matronalisTall, pretty clusters of pink, purple, and white flowers in late spring — so pretty it is still sold in “wildflower” seed mixes, which is exactly how it keeps spreading. It is in the mustard family alongside garlic mustard and shares its habits: it floods damp, semi-shaded ground like your crease and riverbank and crowds out true natives, seeding prolifically. The giveaway that distinguishes it from the native phlox it is so often mistaken for is the flower: dame's rocket has four petals, while native phlox has five — count them. It also has alternate, lance-shaped, finely toothed leaves (phlox leaves are opposite and smooth). Do not let its good looks earn it a pardon.
How it spreads: A single plant self-sows hundreds of seeds — pull it before the long pods ripen, and never let it hide in a 'wildflower' mix.
How to remove it
Pull or cut just as it flowers in late spring and before the long, slender seed pods form — once the pods ripen it scatters thousands of seeds.
It has a shallow, easily lifted root; pull the whole plant — root and stem together — after rain, before it sets seed. This is the primary method.
Because cut or pulled plants can still ripen and drop seed from the stem, the surest disposal is to burn them where burning is permitted, or otherwise seal them in bags for the landfill. Never compost, and never leave them lying on the ground to seed.
Where pulling isn't practical, sever each plant at ground level as it flowers; cutting below the lowest leaves stops most from re-flowering. Clip any that recover.
Because the seed bank lingers for years, walk the same ground each spring for several seasons until the seedlings dwindle — and stop buying any “wildflower” mix that lists it.
A 1–2% glyphosate spot-spray on the rosettes in early spring or late fall, when natives are dormant, controls a heavy stand; treat the leaves only.



Wild Parsnip
Pastinaca sativaFlat-topped clusters of tiny yellow flowers on tall grooved stalks in old fields and along edges, where it forms dense stands that crowd out natives. Handle it with real care: like giant hogweed, its sap is phototoxic — on skin touched by sunlight it causes burns and blisters, though less severe than giant hogweed's. You will know it by the yellow umbrella-shaped flower clusters in its second summer, the tall ridged green stem, and the pinnately compound leaves with toothed, mitten-shaped leaflets. Because of the sap, cover all skin and ideally work on a cloudy day or in the evening, and keep it well away from eyes.
How it spreads: Self-fertile; one plant sets huge seed heads and then dies — cut the flower stalk before seed, minding the blistering sap.
How to remove it
Cut or dig in late spring and early summer of its second year, before the yellow flowers set seed; work in low light and full skin protection.
Sever the taproot an inch or two below the soil with a sharp spade as the plant bolts but before it seeds — this kills it outright. Wear gloves, long sleeves, long pants, and eye protection, and wash any sap off skin promptly, out of the sun.
If it has already flowered, clip the umbels into bags before the seed ripens to stop the spread, then cut or dig the root; bag and trash the seed heads (do not compost).
A large field stand can be mowed just as it flowers and again on any regrowth; cutting at flowering, before seed-set, steadily reduces the population over a few years.
Clear the same ground each year until the seed bank fades, and seed the bare soil with vigorous natives so the parsnip has no open ground to colonize.
Where a stand is too large to dig, spot-spray the rosettes with a glyphosate or triclopyr solution in spring or fall; treat the foliage and avoid drift, and remember the cut or sprayed plants still carry phototoxic sap until they fully wither.
This is not only good stewardship; for a short list of plants it is the law. Wisconsin statute (Wis. Stat. § 66.0407) and the Town of Grafton’s own ordinance (6.1.5.03) name seven plants as noxious weeds that every landowner is legally required to destroy before they bloom, and they forbid letting any of them stand more than eight inches tall. Two are already above — garlic mustard and purple loosestrife. The remaining five follow. Each is a creeping, seed-throwing colonizer that a mower alone will never beat, and the ordinance’s logic is exactly this guide’s: stop them at the flower, before the seed.



Multiflora Rose
Rosa multifloraA fountain of arching, viciously thorny canes that was once planted on purpose — sold for decades as a “living fence” and wildlife cover — before it ate the pastures and woodland edges of half a continent. A single shrub can mound ten feet high, root wherever a cane tip touches the ground, and throw up to half a million hips a year, each seed carried off by birds and good in the soil for a decade or more. Where it settles it builds an impenetrable thorny thicket that shades out everything beneath it and makes ground unwalkable. Tell it from our native roses by the sprays of small white five-petalled flowers in spring, the clusters of tiny red hips in fall, and the sure sign: a fringed, comb-like stipule where each leaf stalk joins the cane.
How it spreads: Self-fertile and bird-spread, plus it roots at the cane tips — a single plant founds a thicket.
How to remove it
Cut and dig any time; do the heavy work in winter when the leaves are gone and the thorns are easier to see, and always before the summer hips ripen and the birds sow it for you.
Seedlings and small plants lift out whole — root crown and all — after rain. Long sleeves and thick gloves are not optional with this one.
On an established shrub, cut the canes back to reach the base, then dig and lever out the entire woody root crown. Left in the ground it resprouts with a vengeance.
An open stand mown or cut to the ground several times a season for two to four years is gradually starved — the standard chemical-free cure on walkable ground.
Goats relish multiflora rose and will knock a thicket down to workable stubs — a useful first pass before you dig.
Paint freshly cut stumps with concentrated glyphosate or triclopyr within a minute of cutting, or spot-spray the foliage of resprouts late in the season when the plant is moving sugars down to the root.



Canada Thistle
Cirsium arvenseDo not be fooled by the name — it is European, and it is the worst of the thistles, because it barely bothers with seed. Its real weapon is underground: a creeping, brittle root system that runs sideways for many feet and sends up a whole colony of clones, so what looks like a patch of separate plants is often a single connected organism. Snap or till a root and every fragment becomes a new plant — which is exactly why digging it usually makes things worse. It overruns meadows, pastures, and any open ground with soft spiny-edged leaves and small lilac-pink flower heads. The whole secret to beating it is to attack the root’s food supply, not the leaves.
How it spreads: Spreads mainly by a creeping root system — every fragment regrows, so mowing alone only multiplies it.
How to remove it
Cut or mow when the plants are in bud, just before flowering in early summer — the moment the root’s reserves run lowest. Repeat through the season and across years, and never let it set its windborne down.
Because pulling only snaps the rhizome, the winning move is to cut or mow the patch to the ground every few weeks all season, forcing the root to spend itself regrowing leaves until it simply runs out — two to four years of patience.
Tillage chops the rhizome into hundreds of new plants. On this weed, leave the soil undisturbed.
A thick light-blocking mulch or landscape fabric held over a patch for a full season or two weakens it enough that planted competition can take the ground back.
A dense stand of vigorous natives or thick sod denies the thistle the light it needs to refuel between cuttings.
A systemic herbicide — clopyralid is selective for thistles; glyphosate where you can accept some collateral — applied to the foliage at the bud stage or to fall regrowth travels down into the root system, reaching what cutting alone cannot.



Leafy Spurge
Euphorbia esulaPerhaps the most stubborn plant on this whole list, and one to handle with care: every part bleeds a milky white latex that blisters skin and can burn the eyes, so wear gloves and keep the sap well away from your face. A knee-high plume of yellow-green flower bracts (it looks as though it is blooming chartreuse) over narrow blue-green leaves, it rides a root system that can drive fifteen feet down and run sideways for yards, studded with buds that resprout from the smallest broken piece. It flings its seed explosively, up to fifteen feet from the popping capsule, and chemically sours the soil against its neighbors. Cattle will not touch it. Once established it is a multi-year campaign, not a weekend job — so hit it early, before a patch becomes a problem.
How it spreads: Deep creeping roots plus seeds that fling up to 15 feet — among the very hardest to kill; never let it establish.
How to remove it
Begin in late spring as the bracts color, before the seed capsules form and burst; then expect to return many times a year, for several years.
Repeated close cutting through the season denies the root its leaves and slowly drains it. Slow and chemical-free — and, just as importantly, it stops the seed.
Unlike cattle, sheep and goats eat spurge readily and will hold a stand down hard — a classic and genuinely effective first line.
Introduced spurge flea beetles (Aphthona species), whose larvae feed on the roots, have brought down large Midwestern infestations. For a big patch, ask the county weed program about a release.
Vigorous grasses and natives, kept thick, help suppress the regrowth between treatments.
Leafy spurge usually needs herbicide for a true kill. A fall application of a systemic product to the foliage, repeated each year, is the standard approach — spot-treat and follow the label closely.



Bull Thistle
Cirsium vulgareThe big, fierce, classic thistle of roadsides and overgrazed ground — and, happily, the easiest of these to beat, because it is only a biennial that lives and dies from a single taproot. The first year it is a flat rosette of savagely spiny leaves; the second it bolts into a spiny candelabra with large red-purple flower heads, sets a cloud of downy seed, and dies. It does not creep underground the way Canada thistle does, so killing the one plant kills it for good — you simply have to get it before it seeds. Tell it from Canada thistle by its size, its solitary large flower heads, and the spiny wings that run down the stem.
How it spreads: Self-fertile — a single plant sets thousands of windborne seeds; cut it before it flowers.
How to remove it
Sever or dig the rosettes and bolting plants any time before the flowers open and fluff into seed — late spring through early summer of the second year is the window.
A sharp spade or hoe pushed an inch or two below the soil severs the single root and kills the plant outright — the cleanest fix there is.
First-year rosettes lift easily with a fork; clearing them means no flowering plants the following year.
Mowing or cutting just as the plant bolts and buds — before the flowers open — kills most plants, which cannot re-flower from a crown cut that late.
A cut head can still ripen seed on the ground, so bag and bin anything that has begun to flower.
Where there are simply too many to dig, a spot herbicide on the green rosettes in fall or early spring is effective — though it is rarely needed for a plant this beatable.



Field Bindweed
Convolvulus arvensisListed by the town under its old local name, Creeping Jenny, this is a small, pretty white-and-pink morning-glory with a monstrous root: a perennial network that drives twenty feet down and runs sideways for yards, storing enough energy to return again and again no matter what you do to the top. Its arrow-shaped leaves twine over and smother low plantings, and its seed is the patient kind — viable in the soil for up to sixty years. It is among the hardest weeds in the world to be rid of, and the only thing that works is relentlessness: exhaust the root before it can ever refuel.
How it spreads: Deep roots resprout from fragments and the seed stays alive for decades — steady persistence, not one pull, is the only cure.
How to remove it
Work at it through the whole growing season, every two to three weeks; the goal is never to let a leaf live long enough to feed the root. Press hardest as it begins to flower.
You cannot dig it out — the fragments only resprout — so instead strip off every length of top-growth on sight, over and over, starving the root across two to four seasons.
Black landscape fabric, or thick cardboard under deep mulch, laid over a patch and left in place for one to two full growing seasons, is one of the few reliable non-chemical kills.
Dense, tall plantings and thick mulch deny the low vine the light it must have to climb and feed.
Tillage slices the roots into countless new plants — the surest way to spread it across a whole garden.
A systemic herbicide on actively growing vines at first flower — when the sugars, and the chemical, run down to the root — is the most effective timing. Expect to repeat it.
You do not need a chemical arsenal. Pull young plants after rain, when the soil gives them up whole. Girdle the big buckthorns and honeysuckles — cut a clean ring through the bark and the green cambium beneath it, all the way around the base — and the tree leafs out one last time, then dies standing, without a drop of poison. Bag a cut stump in heavy black plastic and the resprouts starve in the dark over a season. Dig out the root crown of a shrub that fights back. Cut, and cut again — the creeping-rooted ones like Canada thistle and bindweed cannot be dug out, but mowing them to the ground every few weeks all season starves the root until it quits. Smother a patch under cardboard and deep mulch, or landscape fabric, for a full season. Graze a thorny thicket with goats. Burn a prairie patch in spring where the rules allow. Bag and trash every seed-bearing weed — never compost garlic mustard or knotweed. Walk the land each spring and fall with these sixteen faces in mind, and you will stay ahead of all of them.
An invader is a colonizer of bare ground. Pull the garlic mustard and leave the soil naked, and next spring it returns from a seed bank that waits a decade in the dark.30 The only permanent victory is replacement: fill every cleared patch, the day you clear it, with natives that seize the light first — wild ginger and wild geranium for the shade, the woodland sedges, the ferns that knit ground shut. And work with a scalpel, never a scythe: pull by hand around the trilliums and spring-beauties you mean to keep, and hit garlic-mustard rosettes in late fall, when the natives have gone safely underground and the invader sits green and exposed.

Before you pull it — look closer.

The previous chapter armed you; this one disarms you, and it matters just as much. Half the best plants on your land will arrive on their own, unlabeled, looking exactly like weeds. The rarest skill in any garden is not knowing what to add — it is recognizing what to leave alone. Learn these ten faces before the trowel learns them first.

Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is the plant most often yanked as a weed and the one your whole monarch ambition depends on — milkweeds are the only plants a monarch caterpillar can eat, full stop.16 Heavenly-scented pink globes in June, sculptural pods in October, and a dozen specialist insects that live on nothing else. The milky sap irritates eyes — admire, don’t rub.

Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) is wrongly convicted of hay fever every September — the culprit is ragweed, blooming at the same hour with airborne pollen; goldenrod’s is heavy, sticky, and insect-carried.31 In truth it is the most important nectar engine of the fall, fueling the monarch migration and the bees' winter stores, and host to over a hundred caterpillar species.10

Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) is forever pulled in a panic as poison ivy. Count leaflets: creeper has five, ivy three. It is harmless to touch, sets a wall on fire in October, and its high-fat berries carry thirty-plus bird species through fall migration.32

Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) looks like an escaped jungle plant — magenta stems, purple-black berry spires — and is a native bird magnet; catbirds and thrushes strip it in late summer. Every part is toxic to people and pets, so site it away from grazing children and admire it like sculpture.33

Wild strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) — the little runner everyone mows — is a perfect native groundcover and one of the two wild parents of every garden strawberry on earth.34 Early flowers for the bees; tiny, outrageously flavored fruit if you beat the chipmunks.

Field thistle (Cirsium discolor) — before you swing at any thistle, turn a leaf: white-woolly underneath means this well-behaved native, not the invading Canada or bull thistle of chapter 12. Goldfinches eat its seed, line their nests with its down, and time their late broods to it.35

Daisy fleabane (Erigeron annuus) — a froth of tiny thin-rayed daisies on a lanky stem, dismissed everywhere, beloved by the smallest native bees and the hoverflies whose larvae eat your aphids. It sets seed with no partner at all and quietly fills every gap.36

White snakeroot (Ageratina altissima) blooms a frothy white in the deep-shade floor when almost nothing else will — the last filling station of the year for shade pollinators. Historic footnote with teeth: its toxin passes through milk, the "milk sickness" of pioneer fame, so keep grazing animals off it.37

Common evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) opens lemon-yellow at dusk for the night-flying sphinx moths — a small piece of theater you would never see by mowing it. Goldfinches and juncos work its seed spikes all winter.38

Joe-Pye weed (Eutrochium maculatum) — a towering dusty-rose "weed" of the damp ground that drips with swallowtails and monarchs in late summer. Leave it the back of the wet border and it furnishes the whole room.
None of these you have to plant. You only have to notice them — and let the good ones stay.

The first five years are the dangerous ones.
Everything in this book is chosen to need nothing from you once established — but once established is a gate, and on the near side of it a three-foot oak is not a fortress; it is a salad. The wildlife you are inviting in part five will happily eat the wood you planted in part two. A little armor now, for a few short years, is the whole difference between a forest and a row of chewed sticks.
The deer

The single greatest threat to a young planting. A browsing herd can strip a year’s growth in one night, and a buck rubbing velvet can kill a sapling in a minute. You cannot wish them away — they belong here as surely as the oaks — so you fence the trees, not the deer. The workhorse is the five-foot tree tube, zip-tied to a stake: it stops browse and buck-rub, shields against rabbits standing on snow, and acts as a small greenhouse besides (choose vented tubes so the stem hardens for winter).39 For shrubs, a cylinder of welded-wire fence on two stakes. Repellent sprays work only if rotated and renewed after every rain — they buy time, not safety.
Cage or tube every oak, serviceberry, and fruit tree the day you plant it, and leave the protection on for the first four or five years — until the leader stands well above a deer’s reach. It is the dullest task in this guide, and the one most likely to decide whether you have a forest in twenty years, or not.
The quiet gnawers
Rabbits clip seedlings cleanly under the snow; voles tunnel the mulch and strip a ring of bark from the root flare where nobody is looking. Either can girdle a tree — sever the thin living ring of chapter 3 — and a girdled tree is dead by spring no matter how healthy it looks. The fix costs a dollar a tree: a cylinder of quarter-inch hardware cloth, eighteen to twenty-four inches tall, pushed a few inches into the soil. And the discipline that matters more than it should: keep mulch a hand’s width off the bark. A mulch volcano is a heated vole tunnel aimed at your tree’s one vital organ.40
Disease — prevention, not cure
A native matched to its soil and light is rarely sick; a stressed exotic in the wrong spot is an invitation. Beyond right-plant-right-place: give plants air, prune only in the dormant cold, wipe tools with alcohol between trees, and burn or bag diseased wood — never compost it. Diversity is the oldest medicine of all: a wood of many kinds shrugs off the epidemic that levels a monoculture.
This one is worth a tree’s life. The sap-feeding beetles that carry oak wilt — a fungus that can kill a healthy oak in a single season and then run underground from root to root through a whole grove — fly in spring and early summer, drawn to the smell of fresh-cut oak. A cut made in the dormant cold is safe; a cut made in June can be a death sentence. So save all oak pruning for winter, and if a storm tears an oak limb in the danger season, paint the wound that same hour to seal it.
Insects — keep the balance, not a spray can
The one place where doing less is doing more. A broad-spectrum insecticide kills the caterpillars your birds are raising nestlings on, the bees you planted the meadow for, and the ladybugs, lacewings, and toads already eating the pest for free. A leaf with holes in it is a leaf doing its job. Save your vigilance for the genuine invaders no local predator checks — jumping worms, which grind forest soil into bare coffee-grounds, and emerald ash borer in any ash you keep — and report those to the county rather than spraying the wood to chase them.41
Who eats what: the browse list
Not everything needs a cage, and knowing which is which saves you fencing and heartbreak. The damage even tells you who did it: a deer leaves a ragged, torn stem (it has no upper front teeth, so it rips rather than cuts), while a rabbit leaves a clean, slanted cut, as if pruned — and in winter a rabbit will girdle a young trunk by stripping its bark in a ring, which kills the tree outright. Protect the high-risk plants and spend nothing on the ones nobody touches.

Bring back the frogs. Refuse the poison.
There were frogs here once — spring peepers ringing from this very drainage before the land was cleared and dried. Amphibians return remarkably fast to ground made welcoming again, and what makes ground welcoming is cheap, simple, and mostly subtraction: some still water, some cover, and an absolute end to spraying.
A little water, a lot of cover
Frogs need only three things: somewhere damp to breed, somewhere cool to hide, and an end to the poisons that kill what they eat and what eats their enemies.
The damp crease is already half a frog haven. Deepen one pocket of the basin into a small, shallow pool that holds water into early summer — no liner needed if the clay holds it, no fish (fish eat the eggs), no fountain. Let the dogwood and sedges crowd its edges for cover. Pile a few logs and a heap of brush nearby in the shade. Keep the leaf litter thick. That is the whole recipe. Spring peepers and gray tree frogs find such places on their own, often within a season or two, and then on the first warm wet nights of April you will hear them — a sound that genuinely has no equal in any city on earth.

Gray tree frog — a returning native
Never spray insecticide for mosquitoes. It feels like the obvious fix and it is exactly backwards. Spraying kills the dragonflies and damselflies whose nymphs devour mosquito larvae by the hundred — so you wipe out your free, tireless mosquito patrol and the problem comes back worse the next year. Poison also moves up into the frogs and birds that eat the poisoned insects. One can of spray can quietly unstitch the whole living web you are working to build.
The mosquito bait bin — turn their instinct against them
Instead of poisoning the whole yard, you set one trap that mosquitoes find irresistible, and let it quietly end their generations.
The idea Mosquitoes are drawn to still water to lay their eggs. So you give them one perfect, tempting bucket of still water — and make sure nothing that hatches there survives.
What to do Set out a dark bucket or tub of standing water in a quiet spot. Drop in a Mosquito Dunk (the doughnut-shaped kind). Toss in a handful of grass or leaves so it smells rich and stagnant — mosquitoes love it. Females lay their eggs there in preference to anywhere else on your land.

Why it works The dunk contains Bti — a natural soil bacterium that is lethal to mosquito and gnat larvae and to almost nothing else. The larvae eat it and never become adults. Refresh the dunk monthly through the warm season; top up the water as it evaporates.
The beauty of it Bti spares the dragonflies, damselflies, fish, butterflies, and — importantly — your frogs and tadpoles. You concentrate the mosquitoes into one dead-end nursery while every natural predator you've invited keeps hunting the rest. The poison-free yard ends up with fewer mosquitoes than the sprayed one, not more.
Pulling weeds, not triggers
The same logic extends to the plants: on a lot this size, hand-pulling and cutting (chapter 12) is enough, and it spares the soil, the frogs, and the food web the collateral damage that broadcast spraying always bills later. Think of it as weeding a garden the size of a small forest — a walk with a purpose, twice a year, in good boots.

Why the salamanders left
There is a hard lesson written into this watershed, and it is the reason this chapter exists. For years the surrounding ground was sprayed — Cutter and the other pyrethroids, fogged for mosquitoes — and the runoff found its way to the ditch, the retention pond, and the creek. Somewhere in those years the salamanders, the dragonflies, and the aquatic insects went quiet across the whole connected system. None of that is beyond repair, but the clock is slow: stop the chemicals and the aquatic beetles return in a season or two, the dragonflies in two to four years, the salamanders in five to ten or more. The cure is not a product — it is the absence of one, plus patience: stop every chemical input, leave the sediment and the leaf litter and the hollow stems undisturbed, and rebuild the plant diversity, because insect life tracks plant variety almost exactly — a thirty-species wet edge carries ten to twenty times the insects of a bare three-species one. The unpoisoned yard is not a sacrifice. It is the entire engine.
Building the frog pond
The centerpiece of that engine can be a small pond — clean, pesticide-free amphibian water, fed by a little babbling brook that drops down the slope into a pool beside the existing wetland. It is a weekend and a hundred-odd dollars, but only if you respect the physics, which are unforgiving about one thing: you cannot cheaply lift water five or six feet. The tempting shortcuts all fail — an airlift pump circulates beautifully but barely lifts inches; a buried barrel reservoir fights you with buoyancy in saturated clay; a siphon can’t end higher than it starts. What works is the boring, industry-standard answer: a pump vault. Sink a drilled bucket or sump basin at the pond’s edge, drop a 35–70 watt mag-drive pump inside behind a screened intake, and run tubing up to the head of the stream.
What the frogs need, what the pump needs
- Screen the intake. A remote, screened inlet is what keeps frogs and tadpoles out of the impeller — the whole point of building it kindly.
- Size by the lift, not the pond. Plan ~600–900 GPH to hold flow at the top of a 5–6 ft lift; a thin trickle needs far less. Use ¾″–1″ tubing, never ½″.
- Seal the channel. An EPDM liner strip under the brook — unlined clay loses the whole flow to seepage. The sound comes from rock pinch-points, not volume.
- Keep one corner still. Frogs need calm water; let the inflow enter over a rock at one end so the far side stays quiet, with shallow 2–6″ planted edges.
- Mind the salt and the grit. Divert the spring snowmelt (road-salt chloride) away in March and April; pre-filter dirty gutter water so it doesn’t turn to algae soup.
- Winter it. Pull the pump into the garage in late November and let the pond drop to mud; the frogs hibernate in it, and you restart in March.

The Milwaukee River corridor is one of the busiest wildlife highways in the region, and its travelers pass your slope every day of the year — they only need a reason to stop. The smallest neighbors are the show.

Birds get the field guides, but the insects are the spectacle — the layer of life your meadow and crease were really built for. This chapter is the program for that show: the butterflies and the plants that summon each one, the giant silk moths of the June nights, the dragon-and-damselfly air force over the frog pool, the fireflies your leaf litter has been protecting all winter, and the one endangered bee for which your county is a world stronghold. Add them to the sighting checklist in the back; they count.
The butterflies, and how to summon each one
A butterfly garden is really a caterpillar restaurant: adult butterflies will drink nectar almost anywhere, but each species can raise its young on only a few host plants — so the wood you plant decides exactly which butterflies you get.10 Here is the cast your plan calls in, face by face.











The night shift: giant silk moths
The most spectacular insects in Wisconsin fly after you have gone to bed. The silk moths spend ten months as cocoons in — you guessed it — the leaf litter and shrub layer, which is why chapter 11 is secretly a moth chapter.43




Dragons & damsels of the crease
The moment your frog pool holds water, the air force arrives. Dragonfly and damselfly nymphs live underwater for a year or more eating mosquito larvae by the hundred, then climb a sedge stem and unfold into the adults that patrol your yard all summer — your mosquito control, working free, in metallic paint.44






The fireflies

A firefly spends one or two years as a glowing larva in leaf litter and damp soil, hunting slugs — and two weeks as the flying lantern you see in July.45 Which means the show is cast entirely in the off-season: leave the leaves (ch. 11), keep a damp unmowed crease (ch. 7), and kill the floodlights — artificial light drowns out the courtship code. The common big dipper firefly (Photinus pyralis) flashes a rising J; count the rhythm some July night and you can tell species apart by Morse code alone.
The bees that were here first

Wisconsin has hundreds of native bee species that out-pollinate honeybees on home ground, and one of them is royalty: the rusty-patched bumble bee, the first bee in the continental U.S. ever listed as federally endangered — and southern Wisconsin is one of its last strongholds.endangered listing & sightings — U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service" id="fnref-rusty-patched-46-46">46 It needs exactly what you are building: a bloom calendar that never goes blank (ch. 6), undisturbed ground and litter for queens to overwinter in (ch. 11), and no insecticides ever (ch. 15). You will eventually meet a large green praying mantis on this land and want to celebrate it. Gently: no mantis is native to Wisconsin. The big ones here are the Chinese mantis and the European mantis, both introduced; the one mantis native to the U.S. (the Carolina mantis) does not range this far north.47 The imports are not an emergency — but they are indiscriminate ambush hunters that take butterflies, native bees, and occasionally hummingbirds, so they earn no special protection. If you want a native ambush-artist to admire, the tiger beetle above and the walkingstick are the real locals.

The wood you are planting will not arrive this year, and that is its quiet gift. Oaks are slow; that is precisely why they last for centuries. Buy small trees rather than large — they cost less, suffer the move less, and overtake big transplants within a few years. Water them through their first two summers, pull the invaders now and then, leave the leaves and the logs where they fall, and otherwise step back. As Thoreau learned beside his pond, the labor is mostly attention, and the attention is the whole reward.
So: welcome to Wisconsin. You have come to a place that can feel, at first, like the opposite of everything you left — no skyline, no crowds, no roar of a city that never sleeps. But the quiet is not emptiness; it is an invitation. Stand on the rise some April evening and listen: peepers ringing from the crease like a thousand small bells, a woodpecker drumming his address into a snag, wind moving through oak leaves in a language older than any city, the whole ground humming at dusk. This is a metropolis too — ancient, teeming, and ceaseless — only its citizens are frogs and fireflies, warblers and oaks. You have not moved somewhere with less life. Lion’s Den Gorge Nature Preserve
The crown jewel of the county — and the closest thing to a pilgrimage site this book has.
Seventy-three acres of the last undeveloped Lake Michigan bluff land between Mequon and Port Washington: white cedar and hardwood forest, deep ravines, wetlands, and ninety-foot clay bluffs over the open lake, laced with a mile and a half of gravel-and-boardwalk trail.48 Saved from development in 2002 by Ozaukee County and the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust, it is everything chapter 11 promises — old deadfall, deep litter, fungus, ferns — with a hundred-foot view attached. Go in May for wildflowers and warblers, in October for the color, and in any month for the bluff-top moment. What it shows you: what a Wisconsin hardwood forest does when nobody tidies it.
Lime Kiln Park
Your own downstream neighbor — the river, the historic kilns, and the spirit stone of chapter 2.
Riverside trails, the rapids, the ruins of the 19th-century lime kilns that gave the park its name — and, since late 2025, the seven-ton glacial spirit stone resting beside the water it watched over for ten thousand years.6 What it shows you: the river corridor your yard plugs into, and the human history under chapter 2.
Cedarburg Bog State Natural Area
A genuine Ice Age leftover — one of the largest and least disturbed bogs in southern Wisconsin.
More than two thousand acres of wetland wilderness: bog, fen, swamp forest, and string bog of a kind usually found hundreds of miles north, studied continuously by the UW–Milwaukee field station on its edge.49 Tamarack grows here the way chapter 4 dreams of it. What it shows you: what "wet feet" means to the plants that love it — your crease, magnified two thousand times.
Riveredge Nature Center

Nearly four hundred acres of forest, prairie, and ponds on the Milwaukee River, with year-round programs, a sugarbush in March, and the hatchery behind the effort to return lake sturgeon to the river.50 What it shows you: restored prairie and oak savanna a generation ahead of yours — the meadow of chapter 6, grown up.
Schlitz Audubon Nature Center
A teaching forest on the lake bluff, built for slow walking.
One hundred eighty-five acres of woods, wetland, prairie, and Lake Michigan shoreline just south along the shore, with a sixty-foot observation tower over the canopy and one of the best raptor programs in the state.51 What it shows you: every habitat in this book, labeled, within one afternoon loop.
Kettle Moraine State Forest — Northern Unit
The big one: thirty thousand acres of glacier-built Wisconsin.
Kames, eskers, kettles, and the long gravel spine of the moraine itself, wearing some of the finest oak and hardwood forest in the region, with the Ice Age National Scenic Trail running its length.52 Climb the Parnell Tower in October and look out over what an entire county of chapter-four trees looks like. What it shows you: the destination, at landscape scale.
These walks are better with homework: find a bur oak older than the United States, a log glowing with green elfcup stain, a sedge meadow holding a bank the way chapter 7 claims it will. Every one of these places is an answer key — and the Ozaukee Interurban Trail, thirty paved miles through the county, strings several of them together by bicycle.53
A longer pilgrimage: the Driftless
One trip is worth making for ground your own land can never give you. Everything here is glaciated — rounded, till-covered, the ice’s work. But a few hours to the southwest lies the Driftless Area, the corner of Wisconsin the glaciers somehow missed: unburied bedrock, sandstone and limestone bluffs, cool spring-fed ravines and shaded cliff faces. It is fern country of a kind you will never grow at home — walking fern stitching itself across mossy rock, spleenworts and cliffbrakes and rock polypody tucked into the crevices. These are plants to visit, not to buy: they want a sandstone you do not have. Point the car at Wyalusing, Wildcat Mountain, and the Kickapoo valley, bring a hand lens, and go see what the ice left untouched.

A field glossary.
The working vocabulary of this book, in one place — how a wood actually runs.
- Allelopathic
- Waging chemical warfare — leaching substances from roots or leaves that poison the soil against rival plants. Buckthorn and garlic mustard both do it.
- Bare-root
- A young tree or shrub sold dormant, roots bare, with no pot of soil. Far cheaper, plants fast in spring, and establishes well — the economical way to plant a whole wood.
- Biennial
- A plant that lives two years: a flat rosette the first, a flowering stalk the second, then it seeds and dies. Bull thistle and wild parsnip work this way — which is their weakness.
- Bract
- A modified leaf just below or around a flower, often colored and mistaken for a petal. Leafy spurge’s “bloom” is really a haze of yellow-green bracts.
- Cambium
- The single living layer, barely thicker than paper, just beneath the bark. It lays down new wood inside and new bark outside each year; sever it all the way around (see Girdling) and the tree dies.
- Carminative
- A remedy that eases gas, bloating, and a churning stomach. The aromatic mints — wild bergamot, mountain mint, anise hyssop — are the classic ones.
- Decoction
- Medicine drawn out by simmering the tough parts — roots, bark, berries — where a gentle steep would not reach. Echinacea root and elderberry syrup begin this way.
- Diaphoretic
- A remedy that breaks a fever by opening the pores and bringing on a sweat. Boneset and yarrow teas, taken hot.
- Dormant seeding
- Sowing native seed onto bare ground in late fall so winter’s freeze-thaw plants it and breaks dormancy — the easy way to start a meadow (chapter 6).
- Emmenagogue
- A plant that stimulates blood flow to the pelvis and can bring on menstruation — exactly why several medicine plants here carry a “not in pregnancy” warning.
- Girdling
- Killing a tree without a drop of poison by cutting a complete ring through bark and cambium around the base. It leafs out once more, then dies standing — the clean way to fell a big buckthorn.
- Hardiness zone
- A map rating of winter cold. Yours is 5b (lows of −10 to −15 °F); every plant in this guide is chosen to shrug it off.
- Host plant
- The one plant (or small family of plants) a butterfly or moth can lay eggs on, because its caterpillars can digest nothing else. No host plant, no butterfly — the organizing idea of chapter 17.
- Infusion
- The gentlest extraction: steeping leaves or flowers in hot (not boiling) water, like a tea. How you take wild bergamot, nettle, or anise hyssop.
- Invasive
- A non-native plant with no local checks — nothing eats it, no disease stops it — so it spreads unchecked and dismantles the native web. The sixteen in Know the Enemy.
- Keystone
- A species the whole web leans on. Oaks are the keystone here, feeding more kinds of wildlife — five hundred caterpillar species alone — than any other tree.
- Mycorrhizae
- The vast web of fungal threads laced through the soil and fused to plant roots, trading water and minerals for sugar — the forest’s underground internet. Buckthorn and garlic mustard destroy it.
- Native
- A plant or animal that evolved here and belongs to this web, supporting the insects and animals that depend on it. The opposite of invasive.
- Nervine
- A remedy that calms and nourishes the nervous system. Blue vervain is the one here, for the tight, sleepless evening.
- Nurse log
- A fallen trunk left to rot until it becomes a seedbed, water reservoir, and apartment block — the most generous thing a dead tree does (chapter 11).
- Pappus
- The tuft of fine hairs that turns a thistle or dandelion seed into a parachute. Cut the thistle before the pappus forms and you stop the spread.
- Plug
- A nursery seedling sold as a small rooted cube, between seed (slow, cheap) and potted plant (fast, dear). The practical way to add sedges and slow prairie species.
- Poultice
- A simple dressing of mashed or chewed fresh plant pressed straight onto the skin — yarrow on a cut, jewelweed on a rash.
- Rhizome
- A creeping underground stem that sends up new shoots as it travels, so one plant becomes a colony. Canada thistle and field bindweed spread this way — which is why you cannot dig them out.
- Riparian
- Of the riverbank — the green, wet ribbon of life along flowing water. Your damp crease is a riparian edge.
- Rosette
- A flat circle of leaves hugging the ground, the first-year form of many biennials. Catch bull thistle or wild parsnip at the rosette and it never flowers.
- Savanna
- Grassland with great trees standing singly or in groves — here, the fire-kept oak savanna that once covered this county, and the model for your open rise.
- Snag
- A standing dead tree. Not a hazard to clear but an apartment house — for woodpeckers, owls, wood ducks, and bats. Leave one where it is safe to.
- Taproot
- A single, stout, deep root. Sever a bull thistle’s taproot below the crown and the whole plant dies.
- Tincture
- Medicine extracted and preserved in alcohol, taken by the dropperful. The usual form for echinacea and blue vervain.
- Xylem & phloem
- The plumbing: xylem carries water up from the roots (its old rings are the wood you count), phloem carries the leaves’ sugar back down to feed the roots.

The whole job, season by season.
Everything this guide asks of you, gathered into one circuit of the calendar. None of it is heavy — most seasons ask for a single unhurried walk with gloves on. The rule threaded through it all: prune in the cold, pull in the spring, seed in the fall, and leave the leaves where October drops them.
Deep winter — the pruning & planning season
The wood is asleep and transparent; this is the season of clean cuts and good lists.
- Prune the oaks now. Dormant-season cuts are the only safe ones — the beetles that carry oak wilt fly from spring through midsummer, so all oak pruning belongs to the cold months.
- Hunt buckthorn while it cannot hide. Its stumps and green-late leaves stand out in a bare wood; cut, girdle, or bag stumps at your leisure — stump treatment works even in cold weather.
- Order bare-root stock for spring — cheaper, lighter, and quicker to establish than potted trees.
- Watch the winter birds work the hackberry, and the crimson dogwood stems against the snow. This is also the season the checklist fills with owls.
Early spring — the pulling & planting season
The peepers start ringing from the crease, and the year’s most important fortnight of weeding arrives.
- Pull garlic mustard the moment it flowers white — before the slender pods ripen. This single walk, repeated each spring, is the highest-value hour of the year.
- Plant bare-root trees and shrubs as soon as the ground works, and cage or tube each one the same day.
- Stop pruning oaks entirely — from April into July, a fresh cut on an oak is an invitation to oak wilt. If a storm wounds one, seal the wound that same hour.
- Pull dame’s rocket and young invaders after rain, when the soil gives them up whole.
- Let the leaf litter lie until steady warmth — the fireflies and butterflies of July are still asleep in it.
Early summer — the protecting season
Everything is growing, including the things you are fighting. Short, regular rounds win the month.
- Check every cage and tube — fawns are hidden in the tall grass and the does are browsing hard.
- Cut Canada thistle at the bud, just before it flowers, when the root’s reserves run lowest; repeat on the regrowth.
- Dig wild parsnip before it seeds — gloves, sleeves, and a cloudy evening; its sap burns in sunlight.
- Set out the mosquito bait bucket with its Bti dunk, and refresh it monthly through the warm season.
- Race the robins for the serviceberries. You will lose, but it is a good race.
High summer — the harvest & watch season
The meadow is at full roar and the work shrinks to watering, picking, and watching the fireflies rise.
- Water first- and second-year plantings through any real drought — after that, the right plant in the right place waters itself.
- Pick the brambles in July, the elderberries (always cooked) and wild plums in August, and steep sumac cones for pink lemonade.
- Cut and bag purple loosestrife flower spikes before they go to seed — one plant can shed millions.
- Mow nothing in the meadow — the goldfinches are nesting late on thistledown, and the asters are still to come.
Fall — the striking season
As the sap turns downward, every cut and every drop of treatment travels to the root — now is when the stubborn ones die.
- Hit knotweed, bittersweet, and the woody invaders now, late summer into fall, when the plant is pumping its reserves — and anything painted on a cut stump — down into the roots.
- Gather the first ripe pawpaws from the grass, and watch the tamarack turn gold before it lets go.
- Leave the leaves and the standing seed heads. The coneflower stalks are the goldfinches’ winter pantry; the litter is next summer’s fireflies.
- Check the fungus log-gallery after the first cool rains — turkey tail, oysters, and the jewel colors are at their best.
Late fall — the seeding season
The counterintuitive masterstroke of the whole plan: the meadow is sown into the coming winter, not the spring.
- Dormant-seed the meadow: rake a sunny patch bare, scatter a Wisconsin native mix, press it in with your boots, and walk away. Winter’s freeze and thaw does the planting for you.
- Plant trees right up until the ground closes — fall-planted roots get a head start on spring.
- Pull the late garlic-mustard rosettes, green and obvious after the natives have died back — you clear the invader without treading on a single sleeping wildflower.
- Rake nothing into bags. Rake the lawn’s leaves into the wood and the crease, and let the ground eat.

The propagation bench
Cuttings started in spring 2026, from stick-days and family property. The standard protocol: soak the cut base 30–60 minutes, strip the lower leaves, dip in rooting hormone, set in moist (not wet) perlite or sand, and tent it under a humidity dome — that last step roughly doubles the success rate and is the cheapest upgrade you can make.
What’s taking, what isn’t
- Sumac — the star, ~80%. A one-to-two-hour soak plus hormone; even better from horizontal root cuttings.
- Weeping willow — nearly automatic in wet ground. Large live stakes root with no hormone, and its own “willow water” works as free rooting hormone for other species.
- Failed first batch: London plane, alder, oak, birch, dawn redwood — all open-air with no humidity dome. The dome was the fix.
- Retired from cuttings: oak (graft or acorn only) and birch (near-impossible from dormant cuttings) — start these from seed or by layering.
Realistic odds for the harder species, hormone applied and humidity controlled:

From seed — and the two-plant rule
Cuttings are only half of a home nursery; the other half is seed, and one rule governs most of it. Many prairie natives are self-incompatible — a lone plant blooms beautifully but sets almost no viable seed, because its own pollen reads as “self.” Compass plant, prairie dock, swamp milkweed, and butterfly weed all want a second, genetically distinct individual within bee range (roughly fifty to a hundred feet) before they will fill their seed heads. A clone will not do it — biochemically a cutting is still the same plant — so the second one has to come from different seed or a different patch. Others need no such help: yarrow, foxglove beardtongue, and great blue lobelia self-sow freely, and crossing the three yarrow colours by the house is harmless fun. Two field notes: take coneflower seed from the late-summer heads, not the spent early flowers — about two-thirds of them, leaving the rest for the finches — and start milkweed from stratified seed or a rhizome division rather than cuttings, whose latex makes them sulk.
The gaps to close
The live priority is the slope’s structural soil-binding layer — the plants that hold the hill and crowd out garlic mustard while the ground recovers.
The one plant still missing
Pennsylvania sedge Carex pensylvanica — the fibrous-mat companion to the wild geranium.
- Shade-tolerant, soil-holding, garlic-mustard-suppressing — the single most important plant still off the list.
- In stock at Johnson’s Nursery (~$22.50 a plant; about $225 for a 50-plug flat).
Beyond it, the identified blind spots, by layer: north-slope ferns (ostrich, Christmas, lady); a finch & monarch corridor of late asters, goldenrods and Liatris ligulistylis; a prairie matrix grass in clay-tolerant little bluestem; more edible native shrubs (hazelnut thickets, native viburnum); and a wet-edge accent of cardinal flower, buttonbush and red-osier dogwood. The biggest single ecological gap is a keystone tree: birch (Betula) — Tallamy’s fourth-ranked genus for this ecoregion, host to some 385 species — with dogwood, native sunflower, aspen, hickory and pine close behind. The highest-value quick win is white turtlehead (Chelone glabra), the obligate host of the Baltimore checkerspot, paired with common boneset in the wet zone.

A handful of tags want a second look before the inventory is treated as settled: the cardinal flower’s colour (red vs. the intended white); the “Walmart plum” sold as ciliciana (not a real species — likely Prunus cerasifera or P. salicina); the blueberry varieties (‘Top Hat’ plus five to confirm); whether the ‘Figomenal’ fig truly overwinters in-ground at 5b; the elm species (native U. americana or U. rubra vs. invasive U. pumila); the mulberry (red vs. white); the Persian lilac count; and the straight coneflower species vs. the Cheyenne Spirit hybrid.
