Garden-center soils decoded, and how to pot the compact basil — drainage, light, and the one distinction that matters.

The differences are real. They mostly come down to drainage vs. water retention, plus what's actually in the bag.
Mineral dirt (sand, silt, clay), sometimes with a little compost. "Garden soil" (e.g. Miracle-Gro Garden Soil) is topsoil pre-blended with compost and fertilizer, meant to be tilled into existing beds as an amendment. Heavy, holds water, packs down.
Never put this straight into a container — in a pot it compacts into a brick, suffocates roots, and drains terribly. Bagged plain "topsoil" is the cheapest, most variable product; quality is a coin flip.
The trick: usually contains no actual soil. It's a soilless blend:
Light and fluffy on purpose so confined roots get oxygen and water doesn't pool. "Mix" and "soil" are used interchangeably by brands; purists say true "potting soil" may contain some field soil and "mix" doesn't.
Wrong one in the wrong place is the most common way people kill plants: heavy garden soil drowns potted roots; airy potting mix dries out and blows away in a bed.
(For the bonsai/conifer containers, even bagged potting mix holds too much water for exposed Zone 5b pots — that's why those go the pumice/lava/bark route. Mineral grit does drainage work that even "cactus mix" doesn't do aggressively enough.)
Compact woody basil (African blue / "boxwood" type). Wants what all basil wants: moisture but not wet feet, and good air at the roots. Garden soil straight will fight both.
Without this, the ceramic pot becomes a bucket — soil packs into a dense wet plug, the top looks fine, and roots rot from the bottom out of sight. Classic potted-basil death.
Winter indoor light is the real challenge.
Basil is a light hog. A south window in a WI winter usually isn't enough — it goes leggy, pale, and stalls. A cheap LED grow light on ~14 hrs is the difference between "keeps producing" and "limps along till March."
Water way down indoors.
Cool temps + low light + low evaporation = the pot stays wet far longer. That's exactly when the compaction problem kills it.
The shoe-mat drainage tray — good setup.
Just don't let pots sit in a puddle that collects on it. Standing water gets re-absorbed through the drain hole → wet feet again. Tip the mat slightly, empty it, or raise pots on pot feet / bottle caps above any standing water.
