Read the ground before you plant the trees
Every species in this guide is a guess until you know what's under your boots. The dominant soil polygon on the property is MaA — Manawa silt loam, 0 to 3 percent slopes, mapped by the USDA Soil Conservation Service in the 1970 Ozaukee County survey and still the operative reference in the modern SSURGO database. Reading what the surveyors said about it is the difference between planting hopefully and planting strategically.
Manawa formed in reddish-brown silty clay loam lake-laid material with a thin cap of silt. The till you're cutting into in your wettest mid-slope ground was first laid down as red clay in the basin of Lake Superior, carried south by water, then reworked by the last advance of the Lake Michigan Lobe. The reddish color at depth isn't staining — it's Precambrian iron oxide riding the till.

Hydrology · The defining constraint
Internal drainage is slow because of a temporary water table 1 to 3 feet from the surface. The nearly level areas are slow to dry in spring, and water is likely to stand in ponds on them in spring or after a heavy rain.
What the 1970 Survey Said
In the Manawa series are nearly level or very gently sloping, loamy soils that are somewhat poorly drained. These soils are mostly in waterways in the eastern half of the county near the Kewaunee soils. They formed in reddish-brown silty clay loam lake-laid material that had a thin capping of silt.

Some areas are very gently sloping and are in waterways, and other areas are nearly level and are in the uplands. The areas generally are long and narrow or are roughly circular. Included with this soil in mapping are small areas that have a surface layer of loam… Other included small areas consist of very poorly drained Poygan silty clay loam.

The Catena — How MaA Sits in the Landscape
The 1970 survey is precise on this: Kewaunee soils make up about 70 percent of the association; Manawa soils about 15 percent; Poygan soils about 5 percent. If a polygon of MaA crosses your property, you are almost certainly looking at the wet middle band of a three-zone slope sequence. The species sections that follow map directly onto this catena.

Mid-slope into upland waterways and shallow depressions. Water perches 1–3 ft down in spring. Trees here must tolerate seasonal saturation in the upper foot but handle summer drying. Edge species and the wetter Hill species belong here.

Very poorly drained, near-surface water table much of the year. The Swamp zone — tamarack, swamp white oak, plus buttonbush and red-osier dogwood from the companion species at the back.

Slow but inexorable. A bur oak planted today is a 300-year decision. Plant where you want a long-term anchor and never plan to move it.

The aristocrat of North American oaks. Rounded lobes without bristle tips distinguish it from the red oak group. Light gray, scaly bark — almost flaky in places — develops a quiet dignity with age.
White oak acorns are sweeter (lower tannin) than any other native oak in our region, edible with minimal preparation. The wood is the gold standard for everything from furniture to whiskey barrels. Slower than bur oak but ultimately more elegant.

Impossible to misidentify. The mature bark exfoliates in long, curling strips that hang from the trunk like ribbons — visible from a quarter-mile in winter. Compound leaves with five (occasionally seven) leaflets, the terminal three notably larger than the basal pair.
The nut rivals pecan in flavor — pecan and hickory are the same genus. Slow to bear (15–20 years from seed) but worth every season of patience. One of the great underused American food trees.

The richest food and timber tree native to Wisconsin — and also the most antisocial. Roots, leaves, and hulls release juglone, a chemical that suppresses tomatoes, apples, blueberries, and many other plants within roughly fifty feet.
Site walnuts at the edge of your food forest, never in the middle. The compound leaves (15–23 leaflets) and deeply furrowed dark bark are diagnostic. Tennis-ball-sized green hulls drop in fall and stain everything they touch a permanent inky brown.

Thicket-forming small tree that supports more native pollinators than almost any other Wisconsin plant. Spectacular white bloom in early May — one of the first major nectar sources of the season. Tart red-to-purple plums in August-September make exceptional jelly and wine.
Suckers freely; will form a dense colony if allowed. This is a feature for wildlife habitat, a nuisance if you're trying to maintain a manicured lot. Choose your siting accordingly.

White spring blossoms in late April, blueberry-flavored purple berries in June (hence "Juneberry"), and brilliant orange fall color. Few plants give you four seasons of interest plus genuinely good fruit. Smooth gray bark with characteristic vertical striping.
The catch: birds love them. A single tree without netting will be stripped within 48 hours of ripening. Plant several to share, or net the ones you want for yourself.

At the northern edge of its range here — historically marginal but now reliably hardy in southern Wisconsin with climate shift. Needs two genetically distinct trees for cross-pollination. Tolerates partial shade well, especially when young.

Massive flat-topped flower clusters in June give way to drooping panicles of small purple-black berries in late August. Both flowers and berries are useful — fritters and cordials from the flowers, syrups and wine from the fruit. Always cook the berries; raw fruit causes nausea.
Fast and forgiving. A cutting stuck in moist ground will often root and produce fruit within two years. Tolerates a wide range of conditions but loves moist, rich soil best.

Don't drain it. The wetland is the property's water management infrastructure, biodiversity engine, and a productive ecosystem in its own right. The species that belong here will not thrive anywhere else.

The deciduous conifer — soft pale-green needles in bunches of 10–20 along the twigs, turning luminous gold in October before dropping for winter. The transformation is one of the great seasonal events in northern Wisconsin landscapes.
Wants its feet wet. Thrives in conditions that would kill almost any other tree — true bogs, sedge meadows, the edges of beaver ponds. Plant in groves; tamaracks look strange standing alone but spectacular in groups.

The oak that grows where other oaks die. Tolerates periodic flooding and saturated soil that would rot the roots of bur oak or white oak. Leaves have a distinctive two-tone appearance — dark green above, silvery-white below — which gives the species its specific epithet bicolor.
Acorns on long stalks (peduncles), unlike most oaks. Sweet enough to eat with minimal leaching. Plant on the upland margin of your wetland for the structural canopy that ties wet and dry zones together.

Wisconsin native. Multi-stemmed thicket-forming wetland shrub, 6–20 ft. Fixes atmospheric nitrogen via root nodules — feeds neighboring trees as it grows. Classic companion to tamarack and northern white cedar in northern Wisconsin wet woods. Plant on the wettest edges, into Poygan ground.

Wisconsin native, particularly in the north but historically across the state on alkaline wet ground. On the 1970 USDA Group 5 planting list for poorly drained soils. Tolerates the calcareous chemistry MaA hands it. Slow but extremely long-lived (record >1,000 years on cliff faces). The evergreen structure your conifer-light property needs. Plant where deer browse is manageable — they will hammer young trees.
American ElmUlmus americana
Canopy
Wisconsin native, historically dominant in floodplain forests across the state. Tolerates wet feet better than almost any non-oak canopy tree. The catch — Dutch elm disease. Wild-type seedlings still get sick eventually. If you want elm, plant a DED-resistant cultivar (Princeton, Valley Forge, New Harmony, or the UW-Madison-bred American Liberty series including 'Independence'). These hold their American elm form and fight off DED.
Red MulberryMorus rubra

Wisconsin native and edible-fruit producer — sweet purple berries, heavy crop. Now declining in the upper Midwest because the invasive Asian white mulberry hybridizes with it and transmits a root disease. Critical — verify what you're buying. Most "mulberry" trees sold in nurseries are white mulberry (Morus alba), which is a restricted invasive species in Wisconsin and cannot legally be planted. Source red mulberry from native plant specialists only.

Native to southern Wisconsin at the edge of its natural range — Ozaukee is on the line. Nitrogen-fixing legume tree. Tolerates wet, dry, salt, clay, drought. Fast-growing. The catch — plant only the thornless variety (G. triacanthos f. inermis). Wild types have 4-inch trunk thorns. Pods are a soil-amendment feature for permaculture systems. Pairs well with hazelnut and the oaks because filtered shade lets them photosynthesize underneath.

Worth being explicit about species that came up but shouldn't be planted on this property, either because they're not native or because they have a specific incompatibility with MaA soil chemistry.

Cannot be legally planted in Wisconsin. Asian species that hybridizes with and threatens native red mulberry. Confusingly, most fruits sold as "mulberry" are this species. If you want mulberry, source Morus rubra from a native plant nursery.

Native but climate-stressed
Wisconsin native, but increasingly heat-stressed in the southern part of the state. Bronze birch borer mortality is high. Substitute river birch (Betula nigra) for the white-bark look — better climate match and tolerates MaA's seasonal saturation.
Mapleleaf ViburnumViburnum acerifolium
Native but poor MaA fit
Wisconsin native shade-tolerant viburnum, beautiful in the right place. The UW Arboretum specifically warns it struggles on the neutral-to-alkaline soils common in southern Wisconsin and develops iron chlorosis. MaA is mildly to moderately alkaline. Plant mapleleaf viburnum on truly acidic woodland sites or stick with nannyberry / highbush cranberry for the same niche.

Construction flags on MaA
Compact subsoil and seasonal saturation create severe limitations for septic filter fields and wet basements. Foundation footings need frost-heave detailing and perimeter drain tile. Mound septic systems often required.
Plus side for permaculture: the dense clay subsoil is natural pond-sealing material — no liner needed for excavated ponds.
Wetland inventory check
Before any earthwork in low spots, consult the WDNR Surface Water Data Viewer at dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/surfacewater/swdv. Enable the "Wetlands and Wetland Indicators" layer.
Yellow = mapped WWI wetland (presumed jurisdictional). Purple = wetland indicator (potential, requires verification). The 10% hydric fraction in MaA polygons means some low pockets likely register.
Drainage district status
Northern Ozaukee Farm Drainage District (formerly Belgium-Holland Districts No. 1 & 2, consolidated April 19, 2022) covers ~4,078 acres in northern Ozaukee — Grafton is ~12 miles south of the boundary, not in the district.
Historic private tile from 20th-century farming may still run through MaA ground anywhere in the county. Probe before pond construction or earthwork.

Wisconsin native perennial herb in the evening primrose family (Onagraceae) — not a true nightshade despite the common name. Small white two-petaled flowers on slender spikes in summer; spreads via rhizomes and seeds that hitchhike on fur and clothing.
Found in rich, mesic to moist deciduous woodlands with dappled shade. Spreads readily once established.
Indicator value · Confirms rich, mesic forest soil with intact woodland canopy structure. This is a quality-forest plant. Its presence means the upland Hill zone is functioning as a forest understory, not just a tree planting.

American Black CurrantRibes americanum
Wisconsin native deciduous shrub, 3–6 ft, in the gooseberry family (Grossulariaceae). Thornless. Greenish-yellow flowers in pendent racemes in May; edible black berries ripen August–September, high in antioxidants. Brilliant peachy-red-orange fall color. Found in moist woodlands, streambanks, sedge meadows, and rocky ravines.
Critical caveat — white pine blister rustRibes species are the alternate host for white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola), which kills white pines (Pinus strobus). The federal ban on currants was lifted in 1966 and Wisconsin lifted state restrictions, but if you have or want white pines on the property — or share property lines with anyone who does — existing Ribes populations should be evaluated. Removal may be warranted near valued white pines. Native shrub status does not override this disease ecology.

Multiple Geum seedlings spotted on the property; species identification pending until plants mature enough to flower. Three candidates plausible in southeastern Wisconsin — two native, one introduced. The flower color and a few diagnostic details settle it.

White petals, roughly equal to or slightly shorter than the sepals. Stems with soft white hairs. Common in rich Wisconsin woodlands. Trifoliate to 3–5-lobed leaves.

Geum laciniatum
White petals, distinctly shorter than the sepals. Stems with coarse spreading hairs (hence "rough"). Less common than white avens. Prefers moist meadows, thickets, stream edges — fits the wet side of MaA.

Yellow petals — this is the diagnostic giveaway. European introduction, widely naturalized, often considered weedy. Hybridizes with native white avens (= Geum × catlingii), threatening the native genetics. Pull before it sets seed.
When they flower: yellow = pull it, white = keep it. To distinguish the two natives once you have white flowers, compare petal length to sepal length and feel the stem — soft hairs vs. coarse spreading hairs. Either native is worth keeping; rough avens is the rarer and more interesting find.
