PART I — THE LAND

1. Property Profile & Soil Foundation

Location: Grafton, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. USDA Hardiness Zone 5b. (Property sits near Lake Michigan; some sessions reference the broader Port Washington/Ozaukee area.)

Dominant soil — Manawa silt loam (MaA):

  • SSURGO data: AREASYMBOL WI089, MUKEY 425990, MUSYM MaA ("Manawa silt loam, 0 to 3 percent slopes"), HYDRICRTNG "Partially Hydric," PCTHYDRIC 10.00
  • 85% Manawa dominance (UC Davis SoilWeb); Ecological Site F095XB005WI (Moist Loamy or Clayey Lowland)
  • Somewhat poorly drained Aquollic Hapludalfs formed in reddish-brown glacial till
  • Seasonal water table perched 12–36 inches below surface on a dense clay B horizon
  • The 10% hydric rating traces to minor Poygan silty clay loam inclusions in low spots — Manawa itself is not hydric
  • pH mildly to moderately alkaline throughout

Regulatory / wetland context (non-personal, general):

  • Property is outside the Northern Ozaukee Farm Drainage District (formerly Belgium-Holland Districts No. 1 & 2, consolidated April 19, 2022; ~4,078 acres up near Belgium, ~12 miles north).
  • Historic private drain tile from 1900s–1950s farming can run through MaA ground countywide — probe before pond construction or earthwork.
  • WDNR Surface Water Data Viewer (dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/surfacewater/swdv): the "Wetlands and Wetland Indicators" layer shows yellow = mapped WWI wetland (presumed jurisdictional), purple = wetland indicator (potential). Given the 10% hydric fraction, expect some purple over the lowest pockets. Cross-reference SEWRPC's 2010 Regional Wetland Inventory.
  • Operating rule: the broad MaA area is upland for regulatory purposes, but disturbing any low spot (pond, swale, fill, tile) needs a wetland delineation first.
  • Permaculture earthworks idea: the dense clay aquitard can be used as a feature — natural pond sealing.

2. The Deep Story — Glacial Geology of the Soil (25,000 years)

A genuinely educational thread, written so it can be read aloud:

  • ~25,000 years ago, during the last glacial maximum, this spot lay under the Laurentide Ice Sheet — ice a mile high grinding south out of Canada, a geological bulldozer carrying crushed rock from the Canadian Shield.
  • By ~16,000 years ago the ice began retreating, leaving till — a chaotic unsorted dump of rock, clay, sand, and silt. The local ice was the Lake Michigan Lobe, coming from the northeast, carrying material weathered off limestone and dolomite bedrock — so the till is rich in calcium and magnesium carbonates (this is why the soil is alkaline).
  • By ~12,000 years ago the ice was gone: bare till → tundra → warming. Pioneer plants colonized, died, and accumulated. Over thousands of years a forest built a black, crumbly, humus-rich profile — "8,000 years of being a nutrient factory."
  • Why this matters horticulturally: blueberries fail here because they want acidic soil — they're "asking for a different story." But apples, pears, and plums evolved in similar glaciated, calcareous, forest-legacy landscapes — they're "reading the same book your soil is written in."
  • Indicator species like Circaea canadensis (enchanter's nightshade) signal genuinely rich forest soil — "this ground remembers what it was."

3. The Driftless vs. Glaciated Terrain (regional nature education)

  • The property is in Ozaukee County — glaciated, east of the Driftless.
  • The Driftless Area (southwest WI) is unglaciated: exposed sandstone/limestone bluffs, cool moist ravines, spring-fed gorges, cliff microclimates. It's fern paradise — home to relict cliff/crevice specialists.
  • Practical takeaway: Driftless rock specialists (Walking Fern, spleenworts, cliffbrakes, rock polypody) are things to visit, not plant at home — no sandstone outcrops here. A Cadott-to-Ozaukee state-park road trip (Wyalusing, Wildcat Mountain, the Kickapoo valley) is prime walking-fern territory; bring a hand lens.

PART II — INVASIVE SPECIES & REMOVAL (what worked, what didn't, the theory)

Invasives present / managed: garlic mustard (allelopathic, disrupts mycorrhizal networks; biennial, no rhizomes), buckthorn, autumn olive, reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea; perennial, rhizome mat + persistent seedbank), creeping Charlie (ground ivy), Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii; tick magnet).

What worked

  • Cut-and-cover — sealing buckthorn stumps with black plastic or tin to block light/air. The most practical, scalable, chemical-free method for a multi-zone property.
  • Cut-and-treat stump method — the reliably effective approach for buckthorn (cut + immediate cut-surface herbicide) when not going fully natural.
  • Hand-pulling garlic mustard before seed-set — genuinely kills it (biennial, no rhizomes); a few diligent years knocks a stand back.
  • Dense native replanting to shade out invasives — the core long-term strategy; self-sustaining shade suppression instead of perpetual intervention.
  • Wild Ginger, Mayapple, spreading sedges as living smother layers — the best garlic-mustard suppressors once established.

What didn't work / was ruled out

  • Repeated cutting alone — ineffective on woody invasives; they resprout from roots.
  • Vinegar + salt — fails on woody plants; contact-only, can't reach roots, salt damages soil.
  • "Natural systemic herbicide" — researched directly; no strong natural option reliably kills woody buckthorn roots.
  • Pulling reed canary grass — pointless; cut/pulled stems re-root from the nodes. The hardest of the bunch by far.

Theory / research threads

  • NR 40 logic: the list is sorted by how early a species is caught, not how damaging it is. The worst, most widespread invasives carry the weakest legal obligations. Reed canary is unlisted because it's an intentionally-planted agronomic crop, has a circumboreal native North American genotype that's visually indistinguishable from the Eurasian invasive form (and they hybridize freely), and is too established to slow. Japanese barberry is Restricted with a cultivar carve-out (functionally-sterile named cultivars exempted — nursery-industry-driven). Common barberry (Berberis vulgaris) is the Prohibited one (alternate host for wheat stem rust), a different species from Japanese barberry.
  • Why not just use the native reed canary for erosion control? You can't buy it (no commercial native seed line — the whole seed trade is Eurasian forage stock), you often can't tell native from invasive in the field, and the meek native doesn't do the aggressive erosion-holding job the forage cultivars were bred for.
  • Garlic mustard allelopathy: it disrupts native woodland regeneration by suppressing mycorrhizal fungi networks. The recovery sequence: remove garlic mustard first → plant sedge + geranium as a holding layer while soil biology recovers → introduce mycorrhizal-dependent natives in later seasons.

The pesticide-history lesson (guiding the whole restoration)

Years of extensive Cutter (pyrethroid) spraying, runoff reaching the wetland, retention pond, and creek — the likely cause of the disappearance of salamanders, dragonflies, and aquatic invertebrates across the connected watershed. Recovery timelines: aquatic beetles 1–2 seasons; dragonflies 2–4 years; salamanders 5–10+ years. The fix that works: stop all chemical inputs, don't disturb sediment, rebuild native plant diversity, leave structure (leaf litter, downed wood, standing hollow stems). Insect biomass tracks plant species count directly — a 30-species wet edge supports 10–20× the insects of a 3–5 species one.


PART III — PLANTING THE PROPERTY

4. Confirmed Planted / Acquired Inventory

Recent purchases (building the shaded-woodland-slope community): Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum), Cinnamon Fern (Osmunda cinnamomea), Wild Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis), American Plum (Prunus americana), Apple Serviceberry (Amelanchier × grandiflora), Fox Sedge (Carex vulpinoidea), Pennsylvania Sedge (Carex pennsylvanica).

The "ten plants" core set + established natives: Wild Spotted Geranium (Geranium maculatum 'Dark Roast'), Yarrow (×3 color forms — yellow, purple, red), Coneflower/Purple Coneflower (Echinacea), Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), Great Blue Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica), Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata), Butterfly Weed/"Butterfly Flower" (Asclepias tuberosa), Compass Plant (Silphium laciniatum), Prairie Dock (Silphium terebinthinaceum), Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis), Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis), American Elderberry (Sambucus), Creeping Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium reptans), Blue Flag Iris (Iris versicolor), Golden Groundsel/Packera (Packera aurea), willow.

Placement note: Compass Plant + Prairie Dock + Prairie Dropseed were moved to a full-sun gravel-driveway spot (feasible because they'd been in the ground only ~4 hours). Both Silphiums have deep taproots — no division, seed-only via cold stratification, resist transplant once established. A south-ridge bed by the one-story house gets overhead light only.

Confirmed-interest natives flagged: Blue-Eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium), New England Aster, Golden Alexander (Zizia aurea), Shooting Star (Dodecatheon meadia), Aromatic Aster, Smooth Aster, White Turtlehead (Chelone glabra), Common Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum), Cup Plant (Silphium perfoliatum), Virginia Culver's Root.

Volunteer natives appearing after clearing (good restoration signs): maple-leaved viburnum, rough avens, possible bog aster (look-alike caution given alkaline silt loam), native forest pea (Lathyrus venosus — distinguished from invasive L. latifolius), jewelweed (encouraged — hummingbird/pollinator value, can suppress garlic mustard).

Non-natives identified & set aside: Northern Sea Oats (Chasmanthium, SE US native), Oregano 'Amethyst Falls' (Mediterranean hybrid, Origanum libanoticum-based), Delphinium 'DelGenius Kingsley', plus assorted Home Depot ornamental hybrids. Eastern redbud flagged as marginal — native only to WI's far southern edge, treat as ornamental near the house, not local-genotype restoration. Foxglove (Camelot Rose) — short-lived perennial/biennial, self-seeds but not NR 40-listed; manage as ornamental; toxic to the dog.

5. Zone-by-Zone Planting Plan (the gap analysis)

North-facing shaded hill — the garlic-mustard/creeping-Charlie battleground (holding layer + erosion):

  • Ferns (slope blanket): Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris — spreads + edible fiddleheads + slope stabilization in one), Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides — semi-evergreen, holds the slope through winter; best erosion plant on the list), Maidenhair (Adiantum pedatum), Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina), Cinnamon, Royal, Interrupted, Sensitive (volunteers on its own).
  • Shade groundcover: Wild Ginger (Asarum canadense), spreading sedges (Pretty Sedge Carex woodii) to pair with Penn sedge, Foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia), Mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum), Woodland Phlox (Phlox divaricata), Wild Columbine, Blue & Yellow Violets (edible, fritillary host).
  • Understory woody: Spicebush (Lindera benzoin — swallowtail host), Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana), Musclewood/American Hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana), Ironwood (Ostrya virginiana), native Bush Honeysuckle (Diervilla lonicera — the native one).

Upland hill / prairie — the finch & monarch engine (sun):

  • Matrix grasses (plant these or the prairie won't hold): Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium — the single most important add, clay-tolerant, finch/sparrow seed + cover), Side-oats Grama (Bouteloua curtipendula), Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis), Virginia Wild Rye (Elymus virginicus — fast nurse grass holds soil year one).
  • Late-season pollinator + finch seed: Liatris ligulistylis (Showy Blazing Star — the fall-migration monarch magnet), Symphyotrichum asters (New England, Smooth, Aromatic), Showy + Stiff Goldenrod (the well-behaved ones), Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum virginianum), Cup Plant, Helianthus + Yellow Coneflower (Ratibida pinnata).
  • Milkweed across the moisture gradient: Butterfly Weed (dry hill) + Swamp Milkweed (wet zone).
  • Nitrogen fixers (free fertility for the degraded slope): Purple Prairie Clover (Dalea purpurea), Leadplant (Amorpha canescens), New Jersey Tea (Ceanothus americanus), White Wild Indigo (Baptisia alba).

Wet / swamp zone:

  • Woody: Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis), Winterberry (Ilex verticillata — needs male Jim Dandy + female Red Sprite), Speckled Alder (Alnus incana var. rugosa — N-fixer), Redosier Dogwood (Cornus sericea — red winter stems, living-structure material), Tamarack (Larix laricina).
  • Herbaceous: Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis — hummingbird draw), White Turtlehead (Baltimore checkerspot host), Spotted Joe-Pye Weed (Eutrochium maculatum), plus the woodland color palette (Large-flowered Trillium, Virginia Bluebells, Woodland Phlox, Blue Wood Aster, underplanted with Wild Ginger + ferns). Buy trillium nursery-grown, never wild-dug.

6. Erosion Control (the science)

The best erosion control is layered: deep-rooted grasses/shrubs to anchor + a groundcover layer to shield the soil surface from raindrop impact.

  • Deep-root anchors: Little Bluestem (roots 5–8 ft), Switchgrass, Big Bluestem; shrubs gray/red-osier dogwood, sumac.
  • Walkable groundcovers (constraint: must be able to walk the slope): Pennsylvania sedge (top pick — soft 4–8" mat, part-shade, mowable 1–2×/yr), creeping juniper ('Blue Rug'/'Blue Chip', sun), creeping thyme (2–4", walk on it, releases scent, pollinators), bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, native evergreen <6"), wild strawberry (Fragaria virginiana, native, edible).
  • Trees for slope stability: river birch (fibrous, fast, wet-tolerant), swamp white oak + bur oak (deepest Midwest taproots), American hornbeam, black tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica), tamarack, hackberry (extremely deep, tolerates anything).
  • Layered strategy: fast-establishing river birch + long-lived bur oak / swamp white oak anchors.
  • On Wild Columbine for erosion: NOT a soil-binder — grows from a taproot-ish crown, holds its own spot and self-seeds into crevices but doesn't knit a slope.

PART IV — PROPAGATION

7. Tree Cuttings — The Full Success Spectrum

Protocol: 30–60 min soak → rooting hormone dip → humidity dome or plastic bag → indirect light. Placement by moisture: alder/willow wet, honey locust/birch drier hillside, understory in shade.

  • High success — Weeping willow: 80–95% in soil; 90%+ in swamp soil (ideal — willows self-produce IBA + salicylic acid; aerenchyma tissue tolerates saturation; "willow water" folk method works for the same reason). Rotting-log medium the exception (30–50%, only if half-buried so cuttings reach soil).
  • High success — Alder (Alnus): nitrogen-fixer, perfect for wet zones; improves soil for neighboring trees, pioneer species that shades itself out as forest matures.
  • Medium success — Honey locust: prefers the drier transition zone.
  • Low success — White-bark birch: ~40–50% loose-soil method. Seeds notoriously unreliable in WI, so cuttings really are the way (confirmed by mom's family-tree experience). Best odds: softwood cuttings June–July under humid-but-vented dome (60–70%), or hardwood cuttings in fall buried in moist sand in a cold frame.
  • Other cuttings: elder/elderberry, magnolia (species TBD), native Wisconsin sumac (Rhus — staghorn or smooth, NOT poison sumac, confirmed during the May "stick day"), London plane tree, dawn redwood.

Theory: willow roots easily (natural rooting hormone + anaerobic-tolerance tissue); birch resists (seed dormancy quirks + lower rooting capacity).

8. Seed & Self-Incompatibility Strategy (the home-nursery plan)

  • Self-compatible / seed fine as solo plants: Yarrow (also rhizome-spreads), Foxglove Beardtongue (prolific seeder), Great Blue Lobelia (self-sows), Prairie Dropseed.
  • Self-incompatible / bloom beautifully but set little viable seed alone: Compass Plant, Prairie Dock, Swamp Milkweed, Butterfly Weed; Creeping Jacob's Ladder leans this way. A second genetically distinct individual within ~50–100 ft (bee range) boosts seed set.
  • Clones do NOT solve this — a clone reads as "self" to the incompatibility system (biochemically identical to self-pollination). Need a second genetic line (seed from another patch / native plant sale).
  • Cardinal Flower is protandrous (male parts shed before the stigma is receptive on the same flower) — can self-pollinate from one plant via staggered blooms, but two+ give far better seed set + diversity.
  • Yarrow color-crossing (purple × yellow × red) is viable and low-risk — cultivar-crossing only matters when genes could swamp a locally-adapted wild population, not in a by-the-house nursery.
  • Coneflower seed timing: harvest viable late-summer seedheads (not early-season spent flowers); take ~60–70% in year one, leave the rest for birds + natural reseeding.
  • Milkweed propagation: seed stratification or rhizome division (rooting hormone generally unnecessary; latex sap makes stem cuttings inconsistent).
  • Redbud seed: double dormancy — needs scarification (nick/hot-water soak) + cold-moist stratification.

9. Trees — Placement & Comparison

By zone: Wet/swamp — tamarack (already placed in the jewelweed swamp; the no-brainer native swamp tree), swamp white oak, bur oak, river birch, dawn redwood ('Gold Rush'). Upland — white oak, red oak, American hornbeam, hackberry, Kentucky coffeetree, serviceberry, American hazelnut, witch hazel, pagoda dogwood, native sumac.

Ruled out: aspen (aggressive suckering vs. low-maintenance goals); silver maple, boxelder, cottonwood, green ash (wet zones); black walnut (juglone — heaviest producer in Juglandaceae; hickories are low-level, butternut/English walnut in between — wrong for wet sites).

Deciduous-conifer comparison: Tamarack (clear winner — native, zone 2 hardy, fast 1–2 ft/yr young, loves wet acidic soil) ≫ Bald cypress (viable, zone 4 hardy, slower this far north) > Dawn redwood (riskiest for true swamp — prefers moist-but-drained, leafs out early/late-frost risk; a moist-lowland specimen, not a swamp tree).

Snags (dead standing trees): deliberately left for woodpeckers, owls, native bees. Tamarack sited outside their fall radius rather than removing them. Boxelder bugs are naturally thinning the boxelders.


PART V — WATER, FUNGI, WILDLIFE

10. Water Feature — Naturalistic Pond & Babbling Brook

Goal: clean, pesticide-free amphibian (frog) habitat — a continuously flowing ~15-ft babbling brook, a few inches wide, dropping ~5–6 ft down a hillside into a 3×3 ft pond beside the existing drainage ditch / natural wetland. Sources: sump pump + two gutter downspouts (three hoses). Closed recirculating loop.

What didn't work (tried and rejected):

  • Buried 55-gallon drum airlift reservoir — too complicated; buoyancy problem (~450 lbs uplift from an empty drum in saturated clay → needs anchoring), excavation, submergence math.
  • Airlift pump for the 5–6 ft lift — dead on arrival without deep submergence. Airlifts circulate well but barely lift (most builds lift 6–12 inches). The physics doesn't bend: no trick moves water 5–6 ft uphill continuously without paying energy. Siphons can't end higher than they start; ram pumps need a big constant source that isn't available.

What works (final design): industry-standard pump vault — bury an ~18" sump basin / drilled bucket at the pond edge, screened inlet, mag-drive pump inside, lid (flat rock), tubing up to the stream head. Screened remote intake = no amphibians shredded in the impeller. Pump: 35–70 W mag-drive (Pondmaster/Aquascape), ~600–900 GPH to hit flow at the top of the lift curve, ~$4–8/month 24/7. For a 2–3" trickle: only ~150–300 GPH needed (~100–150 GPH per inch of width); size by the flow curve at your lift. Use ¾"–1" tubing (not ½"). EPDM liner strip on the channel or unlined clay loses the whole flow to seepage. Stream sound comes from rock pinch points, not volume. Frogs need still water — enter at one corner over a rock so the far side stays calm; shallow (2–6") planted edges.

Water quality: spring road-salt chloride in sump discharge is the main concern (snowmelt = breeding season) → Y-valve diverts sump to the ditch March–April. Gutter water is the dirty source (grit, tannins, droppings) → first-flush/gravel-mesh pre-filter prevents algae soup. Keep pond/overflow 10–15 ft from the foundation, grade falling away, so it doesn't recharge the sump loop. Overflow: natural lip routes storm surge to the existing wetland it already drains to. Winter: pull pump into the garage late November, slope bed to drain, frogs hibernate in pond mud, restart March. Build: ~$120–200, one weekend.

11. Fungi / Mushroom Cultivation + the Fungal Food Web

Log pile (rotting/inoculation): poplar, oak, ash, boxelder maple, birch, willow.

  • Oak = MVP: dense, tannin-rich, slow rot (6–10 yrs), best for turkey tail, reishi, lion's mane, shiitake.
  • Birch = color wild card: fast rot, striking fungi (birch polypore, turkey tail); bark holds moisture.
  • Poplar/willow = soft, fast rot → oysters in 1–2 yrs.
  • Ash (dead from emerald ash borer — widespread in Ozaukee) = excellent for oysters + insect/woodpecker life.
  • Boxelder maple = medium rot; oysters + cup/jelly fungi ("witch's butter"). Better chipped than log-inoculated.

Cultivation species: wine caps, oyster, shiitake, lion's mane, reishi, chicken-of-the-woods. Supplier: Field & Forest Products, Peshtigo, WI. Ecological benefits: soil building, mycoremediation, water retention, wildlife habitat.

Wild edibles on these substrates: wild oyster, dryad's saddle, velvet foot/wild enoki, honey mushrooms.

Safety — deadly lookalikes: destroying angel, deadly galerina (especially relevant for wood-growers), death cap, jack-o'-lantern, green-spored lepiota, false morels. Deaths cluster in three categories: white-gilled ground mushrooms; small brown clustered mushrooms on wood (no spore print); app/"looks like the picture" ID. Always spore-print + multiple confirming features. WI Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222 (call before symptoms — amatoxin treatment works best in the first hours). Wisconsin Mycological Society runs forays.

The fungal food web (genuinely educational):

  • Mammals: squirrels (biggest consumers — can eat amanitas/destroying angels harmlessly; red squirrels dry mushrooms in tree forks as winter caches), deer, chipmunks, mice/voles (major spore dispersers via droppings), raccoons/opossums/skunks, black bears (up north).
  • Birds: wild turkeys (significant), ruffed grouse, ground-foraging thrushes, crows/ravens; woodpeckers indirectly (fungus-rotted wood → beetle larvae → woodpecker buffet — an inoculated ash log feeds the chain).
  • Invertebrates (biggest by biomass): fungus gnat larvae (the tunnels in wild mushrooms), fungus beetles, slugs/snails, springtails/mites/nematodes, flies.
  • Amphibians: red-backed salamanders hunt insects around fungus-laden logs.
  • The chain: dead wood → fungi → fungus-eating insects → birds/salamanders/small mammals → larger predators. Remove the fungi and the whole chain weakens.

12. Wildlife Habitat & Ecosystem Work

Philosophy: "Nobody kills nature like nature" — attract natural predators rather than intervene.

  • Predator attraction: screech/barred owls, kestrels, red fox, weasels, mink, native snakes. Nest boxes, brush piles, rock piles, no rodenticide. Owl-box squirrel-proofing: metal hole guards, pole mounting with baffles, timing.
  • Bird preferences: wants goldfinches + pollinators; dislikes robins. Seed-bearing natives (coneflower, milkweed, silphium, asters, goldenrods) are the finch draw.
  • Monarchs: milkweed across the moisture gradient; monarchs use milkweed exclusively as a larval host.
